I've been to a number of F1 races over the years but next year want to start gong to some other types of racing with Mrs Garyhun who has never been to a race event, ever.

I was thinking Le Mans 24 Hour but am not sure if that's more a lads experience. I love watching the WEC as a whole and also BTCC so just wondered, if I was going to take the Mrs to a few races this year, UK or Europe, what would you recommend.

Neither of us mind slumming it, although I have a feeling that glamping at Porsche Curves would probably be more of a gentle way into this!!

Thanks
Gary

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll take a look into these as they're not events I'm familiar with.

Personally I might try a good club meeting first, one where you can wander round easily and are not crowded, one where you can wander round the paddock and see the cars and one where if she hates it you won't have wasted a shed load of cash!

Do you mean something like a day at one of the UK circuits?

I'd go Goodwood Revival without question. The racings great with superb diversity and drivers giving it the beans in everything from a40's to GT40's. The big plus is the atmosphere/side show is like nothing else and often hear of peoples other halves really enjoying it when dressing in retro gear etc.

Yes, I recommend Donington or Oulton or Brands a Hatch where there are good viewing spots. Try a HSCC meeting where there is a good variety of cars and types of racing.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply.

I now have some great starting points and will look into all these.

Rather depends on her taste. Mrs Chev has been to everything from VSCC to the Bathurst 1000, with most things inbetween. She enjoys F1, MotoGP, BTCC and the Goodwoods best. She struggles watching a load of cars she doesn't recognise being driven by old men she hasn't heard of so clubbies are less favoured these days.

Spa is her favourite circuit so I took her to the 24 Hours this year. She thoroughly enjoyed that - really got into the atmosphere, the night driving, beers, etc.

Horses for courses but good luck!

Taken the OH to a few meetings but she gets bored of things going round n round and doesn't appreciate the details in driving a car properly.

The thing she has enjoyed the most was going to watch the European drag racing rounds at Santa Pod.
Rapid fire racing and you can see the whole track.
I recommend anyone to go as until you have heard, seen and felt a top fuel dragster going off the line you have not lived!!!

Silverstone Classic would get my vote, loads of other stuff to do, plenty of great racing from a huge variety of kit and not overly expensive compared to the foreign trips.

Also, being in July you'd hope the weather could be kind and that's important for a lot of Girls (remembering the ex getting pretty forceful after one particularly torrential Le Mans....).

Took Mrs Chev to the VSCC at Donington a few years ago. It was FREEZING and she hated every second, even when Tony Dron was demonstrating a W154. However, when she got rained on for an entire day watching Jenson win the 2011 Canadian GP she thought it was the best thing ever. Girls are so contrary.

I split up with my mrs of 3 years the day after Silverstone Classic, partly because of her whinging and complaining while she was there! The group C endurance cars were nothing to complain about!!

It may sound like a silly question - to what extent does she like motorsport?

Is she dead keen, dead against or so so?

A big crowd isn't necessarily a bad thing - big crowds tend to generate good atmosphere, and if she is so-so about the subject matter it could mean she enjoys it more.

For example, BTCC would be more immediately entertaining.

WEC at Silverstone is really for the purists

Find something with cars that she'll like. My ex enjoyed the mini racing at the old Privilege GT series. I was half falling asleep to these dull cars driving around Silverstone and every so often she'll say "THE PURPLE MINI'S UP TO 9TH!!!"

yes

Silverstone WEC wouldn't be my first choice. My OH has been to the Monte Carlo WRC round with me and Le Mans. Le Mans with decent camping and good friends went down quite well actually.

She likes cars that go fast and are loud wink Anything like that with some added excitement built in - overtakes or contact for example - and she'd be happy.

Silverstone WEC was exciting this year from an enthusiasts POV - but would've been bloody grim to take the uninitiated.

It was cold, windy, a number of the (what I feel are better) grandstands were shut.

My choice would be WEC at Spa and book yourself (let's face it, her) into the Radisson Blu in town to take advantage of the relaxation facilities, and nice bars and restaurants.

Staying in the UK as others have said, Silverstone Classic might not be a bad choice. Plenty of variety, some household names, usually a better month weather-wise.
