I hear rumours and saw blurry pictures that one of the rarest classic Benzes got harmed in this weekends Goodwood event- the slr looks similar to an SL of old but has a straight 8 formula 1 engine and was in its days one of the meanest and fasted (I think with some mille mihlia laurel, too) - this lead later in the sl programme
It is a Mercedes Museum car and was driven by an ex german formula 1 driver - hear he is OK??
Cn people verify

Can't see anything about the value of the drivers house but this has pictures;

Worse than that the hysterical Mail journos completely missed this as well, literally a mile away.

Lovely to see these cars being driven in anger - no ones hurt and the damage is only 'so so' in racing terms.

It was an SLS not an SLR, mercifully.

Phew! The thread title had me worried, although I really couldn't see M-B allowing the Uhlenhaut coupe to be raced.

It's the special built by Chuck Porter in the States from a wrecked Gullwing coupe. It raced there for some seasons with the original engine (NOT the 300SLR or GP engine)and was later fitted with a Corvette unit. I have no idea what M-B are now doing with it - it's got no works history at all.

Still a pity to see it wrecked, though.

It won't be written off purely because of the value.

Feeling a lot better - why I can see that cars should be used and moved it would have been such a pity to see a piece of motoring history wrecked the Uhlenhaut is irreplaceable
Still a shame for the car here and the D- type - great that the drivers are ok - metal will be unbent
Thanks for clarifying

I believe there are actually two Uhlenhaut coupes. And it was a Lister which was rear-ended, not a D-Type.
