Big crash today at the VLN endurance race at the Nurburgring.

Jann Mardenborough's Nissan GTR managed to take off and crash over the catch fencing. Initial reports suggest one fatality frown

Fingers crossed for everyone else there, absolutely devastating to hear of anyone getting injured at a motor race frown

Do we really need links to potentially fatal accidents?

First thing many people will do is try and find out more info. I think as long as it's a link to the news of the incident rather than social media speculation (of which there was plenty today) then it's relevant to the thread. People post links to plane crashes and all sorts on here - feigning offence won't change anything that happened.

Thoughts to the families of those affected.

According to Jalopnik the spectators where sat between the catch fence and the spectator fence. So whilst this is a tragic accident that has lead to a death it seems, much like the problems in rallying, that spectators sat where they are not meant to be has contributed to another Motorsport fatality.

Info from Jalopnik site,

Obviously I won't post the actual picture but it is easier enough to find on Jalopnik site.

It is very clear that there is a secondary fence, but I read elsewhere that the spectators are allowed in that area. Which, kind of seems a bit pointless of the secondary fence - if anything it would be more dangerous as if people tried to run out of the way, they couldn't have done. It's a shame as because if this second fence boundary was enforced, this would have just been a scary looking crash without any real consequences.

It's terribly said for all of the spectators involved, to have witnessed that, but of course especially to the spectator who died and their family.

I'm also deeply saddened for the RJN team. I worked for them in 2010 and I also was a GT Academy UK finalist twice. Jann must be very shaken up and although he shouldn't feel any guilt as it was totally out of his hands, I bet it'll take him a while to shift those emotions.

RIP to the spectator and I hope everyone involved can find peace.

Horrendous crash and glad that Jann was seen getting out of the car- testament to how safe these modern racing cars are. I never realised how little runoff area there is at Flugplatz, the trackside safety looked like it had no chance of stopping the car.

Thoughts are with the friends/family of the deceased and injured, as well as everyone at the Nismo team frown

Google images - flugplatz nürburgring gt, there are lots of photos of different cars (ignore the game screencaps) with the front end up going over there, flat bottom cars have a point of no return when it goes too far.

Video of the incident, it doesn't show the impact with spectators thankfully but nasty nevertheless.

I'm surprised it got lift like that.

Horrible accident. Condolences to those involved.

Nothing like Flugplatz---After going through Hatzenbach you go through Quiddlelbacher Hohe, and climb upto Flugplatz--which is open landscape both sides of track, down to Aremberg.

This looks more like Wipperman into Eschbach/Brunchen.

And (supposedly) Taki Inoue posting possibly one of the crassest comments I've ever seen.
