Similarly impressive is Baby Blue itself! The Escort Mk2 has a 2.5-litre Series 2 Millington engine under the bonnet, pushing power through a Tractive five-speed sequential box and Atlas Casing Elite LSD. Suspension is handled by DMS four-way adjustable shocks on all four corners, and (occasional) braking duties are looked after by AP four pots up front and two pots at the back.
Sounds low tech...

Now this brings back memories when I was in a rally team in the 80`s and early 90`s.

Nissan 240RS. It was dead basic compared to today's computer controlled stuff.250BHP twincam, carbs, rear wheel drive, loads of grunt and the noise!! you could hear it a mile away. We had to do various tricks to get it through the noise test at scrutineering. It was so simple to work on,gearbox change in less than 30mins.
We later graduated to a Metro 6R4.

During rallies it was serious stuff battling the BDA Escorts,Opel Manta`s etc.Often doing late night stages and servicing.
Most of all it was great fun and great camaraderie. If we were stuck for a spare or what ever, just ask the next service crew for a lone part.
Then there was the after rally parties where everyone got rat arsed.I`ve known some where the hotel bar would shut...for breakfast!!!
Those were the days.

Yes , was at Finmere when David turned up with the Metro , said he'd picked it up the previous evening and fancied a play , said he'd done a deal with Humble on the Nissan . Got home later that night to watch Jason and Nick chucking the car off the side of Margam ? on the BBC news .
Guessing from the photo that's Imber , on the plain ?

What happened was,Jason delivered the 6R4 to my workshop and collected the Nissan on the Friday and went straight to Wales for that rally. The next day??? see for yourself. There are a number of video`s, YouTube call him John Humble on one,the best on is titled "Rally Wales crash 1986".

David was away working and asked me to take the 6R4 to my home and "hide it".Can you imagine me having to drive this beast in Reading rush hour traffic on a Friday evening!! The diffs front and rear made the car hop round corners at slow speeds and that V6 did not like idling,it was a nightmare.Got out of Reading, quiet road, floored the throttle pedal!!!
got the shock of my life,I`ve never driven a car with so much acceleration,it was heart stopping.

Humble was a mad dog , in more ways than one . Somehow ended up in a 205 with him at tire test session for IIRC the Peugeot Challenge , holy fk !!!
I suppose prices are all relative but was paying around 3k for an end of season freshen up for a BDG back then , on a gp4 which cost less than 9k to buy . Fun times though .

And it seems he's on the run again (although this is from a couple of years ago)

"Jason Patrick Humble is wanted by police in connection with a brutal axe attack at Ogmore Vale on December 2, 2006. Police believe he assaulted 30-year-old Steven Hatch, causing serious head and facial injuries. Humble, who has tattoos of a swallow on his upper left arm and a panther on his right leg, speaks with a southern English accent. He is also an ex-rally driver and is still believed to be in contact with rally enthusiasts and to attend events such as the RAC, GB Rally throughout the country. He is known to have connections in the Rhondda, London, Farnborough and Hampshire areas. He can be extremely violent and members of the public are asked not to approach him"
