My local rally is on during the weekend, the Galway International Rally. 95 in the main field and 9 juniors with 7 WRC cars and 11 R5 cars, should be fun! Though the weather forecast is for rain (haven't had a dry day since October frown) hopefully that'll lead to some good fun!

So it looks like rally Sweden is at serious risk of cancellation due to lack of snow! The decision is to be made in the next couple days!

Sweden will go ahead but with much shorter or different stages all together - http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/122730

Snow is apparently forecast in the area for weds onwards, how much tho is the question

Interesting they cancel stuff over here because we have too much Snow, over there they cancel because they have too little.
What's the technical explanation for this?, do they rely on the Snow Banks or something?. It appears to be saying if it freezes they can go ahead.

The event can only use studded tyres - so if there is no ice/snow - and therefore gravel, the studded tyres will destroy the road surface = costing the organisers £$£$£$$£ to repair the roads.

Ah, i see.

Rules is rules I guess, but they don't half box themselves into corners with them.

Exactly!

Just bite the bullet and move the event to the far north of Sweden. Or to somewere almost guaranteed snow.

Good to see they are at least giving it a go! But they have had some close calls in the last few years, so it's definitely time to think about moving. I think the event is near the end of it's contract anyway.

I think it was cancelled back in 1988?? and since then 1997, 2000, 2008 (there maybe other years, but those years stick out) have seen events with icy gravel, without snowbanks.

The sensible option is to move it north.

Fairly honest interview. The WRC has been left behind by other series - offering better coverage, entertainment, bang for buck....etc

Good interview. He's bang on with a lot of points. Particularly where he's saying that manufacturers are sponsoring events with the biggest media coverage (except maybe Volvo & ocean racing, not sure it gets more media coverage than motorsport. But Volvo have been sponsoring tv programmes on Sky recently.)

I do think its too easy to blame Loeb/Citroen dominance for a fall too. By the time those 2 took hold of their dominance most of the then stars of the sport were on the way out of the sport, and only a few had the chance to emulate McRae/Makinien/Sainz/Gronholm etc, and the sport was on a decline from the mid 00's.
I think people just got bored of the cut and paste rallies the championship had turned in to. We lost Safari in 2002 and that was the last of the endurance tests. Acropolis gradually got dumbed down from the car killing event it was in the 90's early 00's to just another gravel round there after.

Rally fans are a fickle bunch lately. I've read a bunch of comments complaining that WRC Sweden is now nothing more than a national event and isn't worth it running. but these people would be the same ones whinging if they'd have cancelled it!

Over the weekend there was a post shared by a friend on facebook of how a navigator had exclaimed that "rallying in the UK was fked!" all because he'd been stopped from standing where he wanted to on the Gwendraeth Rally in Pembrey. when someone suggested he come out and spectate in the woods (where its easier to get to places than on a single venue event) he said he couldn't be bothered to do all the walking, or the suggestion of marshalling an event was met with "and be stuck in one place all day? what if its a st location!?" rolleyes

Well that's annoying ......what a censored
If it wasn't for all us marshals he wouldn't be able to "go and play".
I used to / still occasionally compete and now I put something back by marshaling which I enjoy anyway smokin
To be fair we are appreciated by the majority of competitors angel

Anyway moving on........who is out on the Cambrian this Saturday ?

I can see his point. I'd say the vast majority of competitors/organisers/marshals got into the sport by initially spectating. If it becomes difficult/impossible to spectate then where will the next generation of competitors/organisers/marshals come from? The exodus has already started in my own group of friends, some who previously went to up to 40 events a year have stopped going at all. That can't be good for the long term health of the sport?

I realise that something had to be seen to be done of course, otherwise there'd not be a short term future never mind a long term one. It's a shame that the actions of a few idiots have wrecked the sport I used to love to watch.
