Latvala went off on stage 11 and hit a spectator at low speed after bouncing out of a ditch. Luckily he is reported to be ok!

Very disappointing, what pisses me off is, if I was spectating at that point I would remove the offending rock to stop this sort of incident happening, I have done so myself on many events over the years. mad
Was it there before, for other cars, or on the recce? Given the number of times idiots or partisans have thrown and strewn things on the road at the Monte roused my suspicion.

Either way, very, very frustrating and I fully agree with your remarks about removing such an obvious danger.

There have been so many offs and near misses that it really does seem like mostly luck dictating who is still in contention and who isn't! hehe

Skill and luck I'd say ! !
But also think the cars are being build for speed and lightness at expense of durability.
Meeke's sump guard shouldn't have been torn off, Latvala's off shouldn't have been rally ending, and Sordo's off whilst sufficient to break the wheel, didn't look like it should have broken the toe link.

Latvala has been given a suspended ban for one WRC rally and fined €5000 for his incident yesterday.

They didn't follow article number 40 of the sporting regulations, which says that the crew had to stop to check on the condition of the injured spectator.

Crushing win for Ogier, give him the championship trophy already!

Can see why they didn't even notice they had hit him, there was steam and mud all over the windscreen. The FIA had to be seen to do something though, and a suspended ban seems fair.

Did anyone notice that the rock Kris hit was nice and clean whilst sitting on a trial of mud strewn across the road by other cars! Deliberate act of sabotage in my view!

Meeke was just unlucky with his line/ride height setting.

The decent thing to do would have been to remove the rock- the spectators were very quick to remove the sump guard- it's a pity they weren't as quick prior to meeke's coming through!

Precisely this ^ It's the risk you take when you use big cuts, all this talk about removing the rock is ridiculous, what next ? Take a chainsaw into the stage to cut the trees down in Australia in case Brit goes off and hits one of them ? or perhaps take a bag of salt along to your chosen corner on the Turini just in case the surface freezes over ? Get real please.

As I said earlier, the Citroen's sump guard was found wanting and didn't do it's job whilst those on the Polo's did. After all, the sump guard's primary function is to protect the engine/transmission from heavy impacts.

On the video you can see a spectator attempt to remove the rock at the same time that the sump guard is dragged out of the way.

Nothing like a bit of defeatist moaning to start the season off! hehe

Agreed about it being difficult for Latvala to have seen him, spectator was pretty thick putting himself in that position too.

I doubt Ogier saw it as a crushing victory. Meeke gave him a hard time on Thursday evening and Friday (better still Ogier seemed to enjoy having a real challenger) I just hope Meeke's speed wasn't a flash in the pan.

Lots of spectators in frankly ludicrous places from what I could see from the TV coverage. Not sure if they still post "Motorsport is dangerous ...." disclaimers on the entrance to the stages, but some of the spectators would be well advised to read AND understand the implications of standing where they choose to, should something go wrong.

On other matters Hyundai, really good to see Neuville has got his mojo back, he looked like he was really enjoying himself (and trying), a far cry from the rounds he drove in late last season.

yes

I was thinking that too, how long is it since we last saw him smiling and sounding confident during a rally? Good news for a more interesting championship IMO as well as for the Hyundai team.

I think I have to give the 'luckiest driver' award to Lefebvre this time - I lost count of how many clips I saw of him having close calls and off-road moments and getting away with it.

Proof, if it were needed, that the modern WRC cars are incredibly dull, slow and utterly boring hehe
I keep saying I should do the Monte, I really should make the effort to get down there next year. smile
