V8 Supercars 2016 thread
Discussion
I'm watching the Motors TV highlights on my TiVO box with all of these and can't stop enjoying the races. I asked in the 2015 thread about drivers but having watched them I like Frosty/Slade most with Whincup as an interesting guy to watch too. Definitely not a fan of Shane Van Gis, already annoyed me with his over-aggression.
Loved the Tasmanian and Philip Island rounds and am going to try and get Perth in before this weekends next round
having read up on Whincup I can't believe he has made those two mistakes given his obvious talent
Between this and the BTCC I think that's all my motor racing needs met, well until I can find a good place to get NASCAR.

Don't know how you can't like SVG, he's on it from lap 1 and doesn't stop. Good to see he certainly isn't afraid or intimidated by Whincup and Lowndes this year.
Between him and Mclaughlan I think we've got the 2 big stars of the future. I know it's still early in the year but they've both got a good chance at the title this year.

Me neither. There's no doubting SVG is a hard racer pushes the limits but he's no Russell 'The Enforcer' Ingall in my book. Questionable contact isn't made unless called for rather than a straight up bully boy. Between him and Mclaughlan I think we've got the 2 big stars of the future. Scott McLaughlan is aggressive as well. Even Jamie Whincup will use bully boy tactics when he wants to eg. a couple of years ago at Tasmania he went door handle to door handle with Lowndes and too him out and IIRC it was the same year he drove one of the greatest stints ever at Bathurst when he climbed from the back of the pack and barged his way past in the process.
I would love to see Jandal have a proper go at the title GRM need to be consistently competitive week in week out but another champion's drive from Frosty so it seems he's the early favourite for the title.

I can see Mclaughlin at least top 5 this year if they don't carry on with the consistency but realistically it's got to be Whincup as favourite this year, the 888 Holden's are justhe damn fast everywhere.
I think it could be Lowndes year with Gis & Whincup becoming fiercer rivals as the season rolls on, I also reckon Mclaughlin will end up at DJR for 2017.My view for SVG is the aggression is to force the overtake rather than use skill like the other guys do, abit like Collard in the BTCC does. I hope Volvo can give Mclaughlan a consistent car, sometimes it seems to be lacking from the limited viewing I've done on it. I remember reading about Volvo's first win then nothing for a long time, fingers crossed for this year

If you'd said that about Dave Reynolds or Jamie 'bump-pass' Whincup I'd agree with you, but IMO (unless something has changed this year as I haven't watched it recently) SVG has and uses more skill than most of the field.GravelBen said:

Hi Ben and Tommo, I'm not a Vangisbergen fan either, mainly because of the way he dumped Betty Klimenko's hardworking upstart Mercreces team on the premise of being bored of the whole V8 series then quickly joined another V8 Supercar team going against his contractual obligations, not just naughty but nasty naughty
He never signed up with Betty's Merc team though did he? He signed to drive a Ford with SBR, Betty just bought them out and changed the car and team structure etc. If you sign up to drive a competitive car with an established team and then someone else buys the team and changes to a new totally unproven car, thats a pretty big change and (depending on the wording which nobody on the outside knows) may well have been a breach of contract that allowed him to leave.Having said all that, I agree that it wasn't the best decision for him to return to the series with a different team a couple of months after leaving - probably better if he had spent that year pursuing his numerous other motorsport interests and returned after that instead.

I don't bother with BTCC any longer as I got fed up with the Plato/Team Dynamics childish feud. Driving standards are a whole lot better and just as entertaing in V8SC.Bump & runs are banned and in that instance Gizzy is gentleman and happy to give the place back.
