Lads, I've been tasked of writing Dave 'Beaky' Sims autobiography. Beaky is a bit of a legend in the pitlane, having started in motorsport working on the Lotus Cortinas for Team Lotus back in 1966. He then progressed up to F2 (he was Jim Clark's mechanic) and then on to F1 where he was Graham Hill's, Mario Andretti's, Jochen Rindt's and Emerson Fittipaldi's mechanic....and we're only up to 1971! We don't have a website as yet, it's currently being worked on, but I have just set up a Facebook page, if any of you would like to join the group & receive all the updates, it's here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/819809261484648/

LOL---I'm hoping so, too!
In the meantime, here's a link to a little video I did with Beaky and Bob Dance a couple of years ago that you may enjoy:

Hi Lotus 72.
I do not know if the autobiography is finished or printed.
My memory of Beaky goes back to F1 races in Spain where I helped to sweep up and do any odd job Beaky asked for. His first lesson to me was don`t do anything until I ask for it and then only tell me when you have done it.
I forgot to tell him he was our official technical expert when presenting our team brochure for F3 sponsorship in Spain. We got no sponsorship and finally there was no F3 in Spain.
If you are in touch please say that Dave Oliver wishes him the best. I have special memories of those fantastic F1 years.

hi Dave, thanks for your note, apologies for not replying sooner...the other week I spent 6 days with Beaky in Houston and Austin at COTA for the Weather Tech Championship race (a disappointing finish of 8th when they were leading with only 20 minutes to go...still they made up for it at Road Atlanta last week with a win) spent a whole day going over what I have already written and chatting about details for the book, researching photo's etc. I'm hoping the book will be published by this time next year. I will certainly pass your best wishes to Beaky when I speak to him later this week.

A great lad from my brief correspondence with him! I wanted to visit FoH / Risi while in Texas a couple of years back. This was really just to check out F40 LM #90001 and the 333SP they retain. Anyway, Bob Dance put me in touch and we had a good natter but sadly couldn't make a visit work in the end. I can't wait to read the book!

Good luck with the book Gary. You probably won't remember me, but we use to work together on the F1 GPs.
I was the graphic designer.

any update on this as yet, I think it will be a fascinating read, even for just the ALMS etc days (I bet there are some great Risi v Corvette stories), but only just realised last night that he went back to the Lotus team in the 60s too. Wow.

I'm still on it, lads. This last couple of weeks I have started to contact a few publishers with a finished chapter to see if any are interested in taking the book.
In the meantime, here's a pic of me and Beaky at the Circuit of the Americas back in September.

Try emailing Joe Saward - he has had a few books published in the niche motorsport arena.

That's just helped me get through a very dull conference call thumbup

On a pedantic note - you've got "turbo" instead of "turbine" for the Lotus 56B caption ...

Looking forward to the book.

Not at all, Mark-C, thanks for spotting that, I'll get it changed.
