Some are getting confused here: Marshals that attend MSA events are not paid. Marshals that work at track days are paid. So when circuits have "test" days before the actual event then those marshals will be paid, but when it is the actual event they won't. For several circuits it may be the same people but for-filling different roles.

No MSA event would run if we had the same level of marshals as they use for track days. (Not all posts are manned and those that are are generally single manned)

Worth mentioning for those who want to be involved but maybe not outdoors: there are always other roles which require people to dedicate their time like clerks, stewards and timekeepers which would no doubt be glad of some extra help/newcomers. smile

Having been "at it" for over 40 years now it still surprises me the number of competitors who don't realise on Race days most of the Officials/Marshals are unpaid volunteers. Could you imagine the problems trying to pay 100+ people a fair days wage (including overtime) for a typical Club racing event. That's why Clubs/Organisations are more than grateful when Drivers/Teams/Sponsors come along and cough up something a little extra for Marshals.

I once marshalled at a motorcross event, world 500cc round with Dave Thorpe istr. Good day out but they fell over lots, not particularly fast just getting stuck in ruts. I waved my yellow flag like a mad man, great fun it was. Thorpy won of course.

Just back from a great day at Donington for the taster day. I'd recommend it to anyone with an interest in motorsport.

Pleasure to meet Williamp, beat us to the chunks of Aston!

Sadly, I currently have both the beard and the hat. The beard is the result of a bike crash, the hat...well its sun and waterproof. I haven't decided on the 1st October meetings at Donington yet. I may be there, I'll be at Mallory on the 24/25th though.

My MSA licence finally turned up yesterday. Very pleased.

Have now signed up for an event at Donington through the BMMC website.

Not sure if that is the right thing to do or right way to do it.

Do feel somewhat lost with it but hopefully once I've done a few events I'll have more of an understanding.

The following forum can be pretty good when it comes to various marshalling questions:

I found there was quite a lot to take in initially but it gets much easier, 9 years and counting smile

Will have a read through, thanks.

Have signed into the BMMC site and clicked to volunteer at an event at Donington.
As it would be my first event proper event do I need to do anything different?
Should I get a response back or do I just assume acceptance and rock up on the day?
The taster days I've done elsewhere I haven't received my marshals ticket until a couple of days before the event. I'm reluctant to book a valuable weekend to marshaling then to find out at the last min I'm not required/accepted.

I haven't had any dealings with the BMMC but I imagine they'll have a contact email on their site. Trainees are always welcome, the only exceptions I've seen are the BTCC and F1 where they want more experience.

Your tickets and pass should arrive about a week before the event. Other t than that no, the guys doing sign on might ask how many events you've done and that's all there is to it!

Ah, I didn't get a proper look at the programme and didn't spot that there was another 106 elsewhere. I did think it was a different name to the one on your profile. It was rather wet wasn't it?

Yea, I'd been doing a rain dance as I'd got 30s of penalties to serve in the pitstop so wet was my only chance, unfortunately it came a bit too heavy frown
