the thing is though, WHY are ITV obliged to show adverts during the race.

I mean, they offer the slots to the companies, so if they didnt offer 'while the race is running' they wouldnt have to interuppt it?

ITV pay to cover F1. The cost is recouped from the sale of advertising time. The cost to ITV for F1 is way, way more than any Football match with the possible exception of the World Cup (which is shared with the BBC anyway).

They could "top and tail" the race with ads but the cost to the advertiser would be too high and the desireablity reduced.

I was deeply annoyed on Sunday but I do feel sorry for ITV. I know the sort of numbers involved and the penalties for failing to show ads at an agreed time are in no way insignificant.

It's a question of them being damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Let's see, 5 * 3 minute ad breaks. Let' put two or three in during the first stint, let's say laps 5-6, 10-11 and 15-16 unless something is happening. The other two can go in soemwhere around the middle, let's say laps 30-31, and 44-45, again, unless soemthing is happening.

Problem solved.

In Hungary, F1 is the ONLY program that is not interrupted by adverts, they just top and tail with 10 minutes ads each end.

ITV-F1 would like to acknowledge all those F1 fans who emailed this site to vent their frustration over the weekend’s ad break placement.

We regret to say that due to the huge number of responses, we won’t be able to answer each message personally.

However the strength of opinion has been registered and this has been communicated to various parties within ITV Sport.

It is ITV1’s firm commitment to continue to bring you the best F1 coverage that we can through the television and the internet.
