Falling asleep at 3am Pwig?

It's easy when you're stood out in the cold but sat in a noisy car bouncing it's way down a rough track there is no chance of falling asleep!

The staying awake side of it you get used to after a few events and it's helped a lot with staying awake to finish coursework at Uni

Did you enjoy it though?

Can't believe I've missed this thread!

Was it the Oaks Trophy you were out on, pwig? I understand it was a wet and foggy night...

Next event up north is the Ribble Valley Trophy Rally in two weeks time (16/17 Sep), starts and finishes at the Anchor Inn, Gargrave (I know its not exactly next door to Manchester, but its a start...)

If you're around at the start, come and find me, I'm navigating for a guy in a white Astra GTE.

You are getting me all nostalgic now guys.

I used to do Road Rallys in the '70's including some of the 'Motoring News' events(Cilwendeg and Border Uniflow etc)

I don't think anyone is old enough to remember these though!?

Just found out that the Cilwendeg is still going.Anyone done it recently?

It used to be a pre-plot road race, highly recommended!!

I did it in 2005, and managed to win a pot...

Well done Graham, clap

Is it still a pre-plot race?

Can't read the wording on the cup...did you win?

I'm surprised you managed to find a specific pot amongst your large collection Graham!!!

For the uninitiated, Graham is somewhat successful is the field of road rallying

Steve, indeed I did, 10 months on and I still can't quite believe it! It was a very very wet night but Tony Bach and I got the job done. Plan is to sit with him again this year, and see what happens

You'll struggle to find an event in Wales that isn't pre-plot, although the Rali Bro Tysul (Valley Services, as was) ran a little bit of plot and bash this year. The Cilwendeg (and the other two Teifi Valley MC events) hand out photocopied maps with the route already on them, which has its good and bad points. Personally I prefer a "proper" pre-plot event, where the organisers give you a routecard to plot an hour before the start, but its good that events have variety.

Rallies are still very competitive even without targa timing. Regularity sections are usually used instead, but the average speed isn't usually possible...!

There are some great pre-plot events in England too, some in Lancashire (Bolton Midnight, Garstang & Preston Memorial, Illuminations), a couple in Derbyshire, and a few more in the South-West (Ilfracombe, Carpetbagger (Bournemouth Rally, as was))

There are still a few MN named events about now, and some that run under different names. There are lots of things going against road rallying at the moment (ever increasing difficulty with PR, loss of public right of ways, tigher car rules from the MSA, talk about government blanket speed limits) but its still happening, for the moment...

It's a timed endurance event at an average speed of 30mph at minute intervals sb-1, calling it a race gets the good people at MSA towers hot under the collar.

Hi Pwig,

I've emailed Matlock Motor Club for detaiils on their 12 car championship, and had no reply.

Did you ever get to hear from them?

Done anymore on the road rallying front?
