The question is 'Can JB win the the championship next year?'

Having studied a great deal of data on comparing him to Rubens, and Rubens to Schmi, I think its a possibility with some car improvements.

What do you all think?

Well he did score more points than anyone else in the last 7 Grand Prix, if he can do that over the first 7 Grand Prix as well then he can be.

No chance he has got a bad car under him, he should be leaving Honda this year, but has signed a contract?

well going on the bases of this year it was not quick enough to keep up the whole race.

If Honda improve and with their stability it should (albeit with some doubts over their technical dept), then they will benefit from the driver changes. Button has the consistency to do it(proven by the last 7 races and all of 2004)

Button certainly has the talent to be a world champion.

Just look at his performance in the Brazilian GP, he went from 14th to 3rd, beating all but one Ferrari and the current world champion in the process.

IF Honda can provide him with a consistently quick car, he could certainly up there challenging in 2007.However, I think Kimi and Ferrari will be the ones to beat.

If the Honda is quick, reliable in tandem with good pit strategy it is possible. Jenson has the talent definately, he's never had the car.

Ferrari are going to be a totally different team next year and I think it will take a good few races to get anywhere near where they were this season.

Renault will suffer post Alonso. Certainly in the first half of the season.

McLaren - depends on the car but don't see it any better or worse than this year - although they do have Alonso.

So that really leaves Honda. Same drivers. Same team. And what looks like a cracking engine. I'd say that Button's more than an outside bet for a crack at the title.

He can be fast. If Honda improves its reliability (a lot) and speed (a little), and Button drives consistently, then he could probably make the top three.

World Champions don't luck in, they are fast out of the box, and noticeable.
Jensons just not got it.
Do his star shine like Massa's, or Alonsos, or Raikonens's ?
Honda look good short term, but Williams like McLaren are just a little bit more class.
I never got over the fact Honda dropped Frank Williams F1 outfit, because he was disabled, and gave their engine to Ron.
JB's double about term tells me he's about cash, not the championship.

He's already managed to be top three, in 2004. Best of the rest behind the Ferraris and outscoring Alonso by 26 points.

1 Michael Schumacher German Ferrari 148
2 Rubens Barrichello Brazilian Ferrari 114
3 Jenson Button British BAR-Honda 85
4 Fernando Alonso Spanish Renault 59
5 Juan Pablo Montoya Colombian Williams-BMW 58

Must agree with that one.

Testing out of season varies from team to team. I can remember back to some of the jerez tests that mclaren done in the months coming to Austrialia. the 2 mclarens lapped the whole field but there testing times did not suggest they would be that quick in the first race.

A more detailed analysis of the testing is required, like entry corner speeds, speed on exit, braking distance. which are all not avaliable in the public domain.

From what I have seen in the races this year both Honda drivers have consistantly been top or near the tope on corner apex speed but have been nowhere on straightline speed through the speed traps.

His problems agreeing a contract to drive for a team have held him back, certainly. When he drove for Renault, Flav dropped him when his contract expired mainly because of trouble getting his people to agree a new one - the same people, I believe, who signed him to Williams when he was still committed to BAR. Renault, at the time a sleeping giant, replaced him with Alonso, who has now gone on to 2 world championships - makes you think what could have been...

I do think he wants to race and win, but he has unfortunately had some incompetent people around him in the past. His long term deal with Honda has let him concentrate on racing, in fact he is so committed to them that I think it is making him work harder to get to the front.

Good point D, but I still don't think he shines.
He's missing that arrogance all Champions, not just F1, all champions have that unshakeable arrogant self belief.
It gives them a crushing edge.
Fernando has definitely got it.
