Of course, once upon a time, Oulton Park DID host a contemporary race for F1 cars - the Gold Cup.

Those were the days.

They still run this every year, Eric. Its one of the highlights of the season watching the old cars powering round the circuit.

A must see event for hardened motorsport fans. thumbup

It did indeed Eric. I seem to remember the formula 1 drivers also raced in other races on the same day.
i.e Jim Clark in a lotus cortina and I also seem to remember him in an elan as well.

As Lazyitus says, the "revival" version of the Gold Cup is run these days. The point I was making was that the race was originally for CONTEMPORARY cars of the day.

That is one of the main problems of today's F1 in that you NEVER see the cars outside of Bernie's multi-ringed circus.

F1 fans of the 50s and 60s (and to a lesser extent, the 70s) had a much better deal in many ways.

Brands Hatch.

Seen F1 cars at Brands many time - yes I am 'that' old

Brands is a great track for drivers and spectators.

One memory for you.....mid 80's (think turbo's & ground effects), watching F1 practice from the make-shift (ie. scaffolding) grandstand at Paddock, speed indicator at start line, Keke Rosberg hits 184mph and changes up a gear before Paddock eek
We were all very impressed.

Brands Hatch. Just to see how 20 F1 cars deal with Paddock the first time they get there.

And it's only 20 mins away!

Same here, perfect viewing too.

Modern F1 at Brands Hatch would be the most boring race imaginable. They have nowhere to overtake, it has too many high speed or medium speed (in an F1 car) corners. Modern F1s need long straights and big braking zones to give them any chance of doing so. You might rubbish the new Tilke designed circuits as I do but they all produce corners and areas where the cars can overtake. Remember the Champ Car race a couple of years ago, ok they were only using the Indy circuit but it at least had a slow corner like Druids, complete borefest, I can't remember a single racing overtake. They haven't been back.

part of the reason for the champ cars being boring at brands (I went to that race) was because they had some weird rule about the fuel and they could all just about do the race distance with 1 (or 2, I can't remember) stops, so they just cruised round all trying to be the most economical.

Dubai Autodrome (my daughter lives in walking distance, 5 mins by car)

The track is finished but the rest of the infrastructure is in progress, could happen in a few years though I think. (daughter will probably be somewhere else by then )

Might be a bit bumpy for the F1 boys, but I'd like to see the Birmingham Superprix back on the F3 and BTCC calendar.

Only got to go once when I was really young, and it still remains one of the most memorable motorsport experiences ever.

Anyone else remember going along?

Remember standing in the garden listening and dreaming of watching * dad could not be arsed to take us * this was in Stirchley just up the road :-). Even now I still remember those cars sounding great.

yup i went on 1989 and 1990, saw Tony Pond cloud9 win in a 6r4, i was with my father who'd managed to blag a jolly off compaq, so were in the boxes above the pitlane think it was the bristol street motors garage, saw alesi win f3000 in '89 and naspetti in 1990. also saw donnelly, blundell, apicella, chavez and then saw the touring cars with slim harvey and andy rouse etc. good old days. they should defo bring the race back.

For anyone wanting F1 at the likes of Brands or Oulton Park, compare their current, comparatively fence-free status with Silverstone, then you'll see what FIA Grade 1 status will do to them.

The changes MSV had to make to Brands for A1GP & DTM are bad enough without never-ending fences and grandstands a-plenty.

Good points, and seeing as I race at those tracks the F1 boys can F**** off :-)

Absolutley.

Modern F1 only ruins and bankrupts the circuit owners.

It is best to be avoided.

When people say they would like to see F1 races at these "non-F1" circuits, do they mean the circuits as they currently exist or would they be prepared to see the circuits ammended beyond all recognistion to accomodate the requirements of the modern F1 era?

The first option. The opportunity to see cars race around tracks as they currently stand, not ripped apart and "Bernied" to make them 10 lanes wide with 1000 acre run offs.

No one ever wants a drivers safety to be comprimised, but the need for interesting racing on varried circuits is essential.

All of the new clean sheet circuits are essentially the same ..... long straight into hairpin chicane ..... fast wiggly bit with short straights and no overtaking ...... long straight into hairpin infront of grandstand ..... back to long start finish straight again..... zzzzzzzzzzzz

I'm sure that was about the period that my dad took me up there. I remember sitting on the grass banking on the roundabout at the top end of the circuit watching a full grid of BTCC RS500's coming straight up towards us cloud9 b'jeysus then things were quick - always my favourite saloon racer, and always will be.
