Mclaren: Still Our Lewis (tm) continues to excel. Quiet race really but yet again got the job done. Leading the championship, how bizarre is that. Alonso is looking like a man whose been slapped with a big wet fish. This is not what he was expecting and I'm sure the team orders conversation with Big Ron will occur very shortly. I'd love to be a fly on the wall for that one.
Team orders very shortly?
Alonso's world champ, he's two points behind the lead with the season less than 1/4 over, and his teammate is a rookie.
No disrespect to Hamilton's fabulous performances, but there is no way that we're remotely close to team orders at McLaren.
(Btw, supposedly Ferrari/Marlboro are paying Raikkonen $50M/season.)

BTW I thought there was a blanket ban on tobacco sponsorship now, how is Ferrari getting away with it? No other team have any tobacco sponsors on their cars...
Opps - just read my own post... of course it is Ferrari - DUH!!!! Forgot that they can do what ever they like

Neither does Ferrari. However, the Marlboro logo is so well known that even having some vertical white lines forming a white rectangle on the red of the Ferraris is sufficient to make you think "Marlboro".

I'm going to watch with interest kimi (the car breakers) reliability over the season, considering this has been where Ferrari have ruled for years, its curious to see Massa had problems in the first race, Kimi in the 4th, yet the Mclarens seem to have sorted their issues...
I do wonder how much a driver influences the reliability of the car...

I've always thought they could get away with using a colloquial term for cigarettes on the sides of their cars in countries that aren't english speaking in the main.
Perhaps Ferrari could plaster the word "Fags" all over their cars Might not work too well in America though

IIRC the ban only applies in Europe (and perhaps Aus & USA too).

That's what I thought was in place for the past few years but that this year would be a total ban for the sport. Why do you think no other team runs with tobacco sponsors? BAT pulled away from Honda, West from McLaren, Mild Seven from Renault etc etc...
TheOriginalGT40 said:
so why did all the other tobacco companies walk away from F1 last year? It's not like they have no money to spend, and it's not like the teams would have said no if they came a knocking?
Because they wouldn't get much coverage - over half the races are in tobacco ban areas.
To be honest, Marlboro is now so synonymous to Ferrari in the viewing publics eyes they don't need their logo's on everything, the colours will do (Unlike West, Mild Seven etc - the public aren't as familiar with them).
There is nothing to stop Marlboro still sponsoring, they just can't show logos in certain countries.

Which is ironic considering McLaren and Marlboro were virtually interchangable words in the late 80's / early 90's.
I still remember the outcry when Ferrari first started to carry small Marlboro logos.

Marlboro have a long history with ferarri, and they were willing to continue this even with reduced coverage

I created this thread (along with the other race threads) to generate comment about the races, which clearly they have done. Sadly there's always a tendency from the childish to try to degenerate the thread into a whinge because F1 is too complicated for them to follow and why can't there be more big accidents etc.
Clearly it can't be that dull if they're still watching it...

Sheesh....guys. I never said it was crap. I sat down Sunday with the intention of watching the race flag to flag and giving it a chance.
No question, the F1 circus is still a mighty spectacle (the redbull hospitality palace?! ) and there was some excitement. But the two points I made I felt were valid ones and I wanted the reaction of some of the die-hards. They werent my opinions that the sport is crap. I dont think its crap. They were observations of actual events that I felt detract from what the sport is about.
Predicatably, I was automatically stoned to death as a heretic for daring to question any aspect of the sport.
Perhaps there should be a "positive comments and championing of the sport only please" clause, in the Monaco GP thread.
ETA - Did anyone watch the World SuperBikes from Monza? If racing is your thing, you could do alot worse - and there's a bonafide British hero in it riding his socks off and winning with a good chance of being World Champ. Just a suggestion.

This thread is for comment about the race weekend. If you don't like F1 in general or don't like contempory F1 then fair enough but please create a seperate thread for this (of which there have been several in the past), otherwise the race threads degenerate into slanging matches, which is unfair to those that want to debate the aspects of the race.

My points werent about the race weekend? I thought they were relevant.
I hate to be a pedant but by your own criteria, someone posting "I thought the Spanish GP was boring as batsh!t." (which I didnt) is perfectly acceptable.
Here's an aspect of the weekends race we can debate:
Pit to car audio telling the driver words to the effect of:
"Youre going to have push now, we wont be able to take him on a stop, it looks like we may have to overtake him on the track" etc etc
To me, thats worthy of discussion. I found it an unfortunate demonstration of the state of the sport and contrary to the spirit of motor racing. Im not even saying its the team's fault, doubtless they just race within the rules as best they can.

totally with you. it incensed me to hear that yesterday. I couldn't believe that the teams now rely so heavily on the pit stops to do their racing that they would rather a driver didn't even try.
I have said before that the issue of losing downforce is red herring to the over taking conundrum. If they can do it with all the back markers when they are forced to the back of a grid by an engine change then why can't they do it at other times.
As for this weekend Kimi is turnign into a spoilt brat surely, leaving the track before the end of the race and not wantign to be seen with Schumacher is just stupid. If he doesn't want t be there let someone else take his drive.
