David great pics, chris great insight into what happened the other side of the fence. Had a great time there even with the weather throwing absolutely everything it had at us. Even thunder and lightning whilst in open moors next to Para's leap at Epynt. Still all good fun. Here's some of mine.

Some stunning pictures guys. I decided against going this year. I was just wondering, is the rally GB always based in Wales, or do they rotate between Sotland, Wales and England? I know there is a rally Ireland, so i take it this covers both Northern and Southern?

Thanks

Wildsea they don't rotate it - officially it is Wales Rally GB and that's how it stays. There is talk of increased investiture from the Forestry commission et al to improve facillities over the next few years.

I'd really love to know the ISO, speed etc settings you used for some of those photos above, mine are too amateurish for my liking. Any tips greatly appreciated.

That (IMO) is an astonishingly good photo! The colours, textures and light are almost sureal. (Did you photoshop it at all?)

You're welcome, it's a good photo, I forgot to mention the composition!

I just noticed viewing it on another monitor that the first time I saw it, it was very dark, meaning the background trees on the left were almost black with just some bright dashes of green, also the mud had a slightly redder tinge!

I guess a lot of it depends on you monitor settings, it seemd a lot more moody and dramatic on a monitor that was a bit darker than my other one, still, if it was one of my pics I would be looking to get it printed.

Great shot!

My other half Jo has just posted up on S2ki the rest of the details - thought I'd post it here if anyone was interested...

Day 1 = Rheola
Day 2 = Epynt
Day 3 = Trawscoed

Day 2 was quite interesting! As well as the Citroen and the Scooby (which parked itself on the bonnet of the Citroen and managed to reverse off and drive away with wheels hanging off) which chased me up the bank, we also had mechanical failure of a Welsh drivers car (can't remember his name), and nearly a 3 car pileup after Tony Jardine's roll. Then total traffic chaos as his car was blocking the box junction which was the way out for every marshall and other car on the stage. His crew were keen the car wasn't dragged (front wheel seized) in case it caused more damage, but the rescue crew was stuck in the traffic trying to get out.

The usual wally's thinking they know best, and don't have to wait in a traffic jam rolleyes.gif

Marshal duties are basically
a) keep yourself safe
b) keep competitors and spectators safe
c) keep media safe (you can see in the pic I'm wearing a green tabard - that means I was "media marshal" for our junction)

so keeping spectators in safe area's, warning everyone of oncoming vehicles, keeping debris away from the track, blowing whistles, making sure stage furniture stays in place (signs, tapes etc.), answering random questions like "where's the best jump, how far is junction 18" etc. etc. No eating, drinking, sitting down on the job, or taking pics while in tabard...

You supply your own radio's and have to be on the stage 4 hours befoer the first competing car (i think the earliest we have been on stage is about 3.30am but it can be earlier if you're on the first stage of the day). About 1 hour before first competing car you have to be at your post, because safety cars are out checking the course (FIA safety, spectator safety, then the 000, 00 and 0 cars).

99% of the time you are just standing around blowing a whistle though!

You'd be surprised (or perhaps not) how many marshals do not take it seriously at all - even with a car on its roof, and Chris and I getting the drivers out of the car, some marshals just stood and watched despite spectators coming down to help.

On the 2nd day we came fairly close to being taken out by 4 cars - I had a bit of a moment after the first one and quite a big moment after the 2nd one, in the realisation that they both missed us by a few feet. Although, before anybody says "well you were standing in a dangerous place" you have to think that a) we are alive and well due to the bank protecting us as planned, and b) as a marshal you tend to be in more dangerous places and you get adept at spotting and planning escape routes - trees and banks for protection for example.

You also have to be prepared for antagonism and agression from spectators, but particularly from the media who wear these magic tabards which provide even more protection than a duvet.

You also have to drive the rally stage itself, which is a borderline between really fun and exciting, and a bit worrying (if you are worried about your car) - the rally cars churn the mud up creating quite large ruts and potholes which you can lose a Fiesta in ! Having said that, the Scoob didn't slide once, and we had great fun driving out of trawscoed.

Great fun isn't it! I can attest to having had the odd tow truck have to come and get my (hire) car out of a stage or two on the Sunday. Greece and Argentina being two that spring to mind.

If you are browsing the internet with the Firefox web browser. You can download and install this - http://ted.mielczarek.org/code/mozilla/fxif/

It'll show the EXIF data contained within photos (that have it still) online. Right click them, go to properties and it'll show you the ISO, App etc.. just like you were looking at the image details offline.

If you are using internet explorer then I don't know what plug-in will work but there must be one. It's the EXIF data that you want to know.
