Normally I would agree, but hasn't there been more F1 drivers winning BBC Sports Personality than there have been footballers? I was amazed when I heard that one!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_Sports_Personalit...

If you want a true 'minority' sport, in terms of TV coverage, I give you fishing. At international level England has one of the most powerful and accomplished squads, out of 3 men ever to win 3 world titles, 2 are English, and one of them is only one man ever to win 3 on the trot... Ever heard any of that mentioned on Sports Personality?
Whoever this guy is, he could make a fortune by switching codes to the more lucrative 'international watching paint dry championships'...groomi said:

They were keen enough to give last year's award to an equestrian .BBC not keen on minority sports.... Discuss
(We can be confident that being a royal had nothing to do with it.)
Nicole Cooke deserved it last year, and she was barely noticed. In fact, you could tell by the way she was interviewed by a complete numbnuts, who appeared to think that cycling had something to do with bottle banks, that one needs to be either mainstream or good copy, or the Beeb can't be bothered.

1982: Daley Thompson (decathlete) 1983: Steve Cram (middle-distance runner)
1987: Fatima Whitbread (javelin thrower)
1995: Jonathan Edwards (triple jumper)
2006: Zara Phillips (three-day eventer)
Those are hardly big sporting events.

The BBC has always pushed track and field and as gold medal winners at Olympic or World Championship level the four athletes were in their sports agenda. Wasn't Jonathan Edwards a world record holder as well?
Motor Sport doesn't get so much of a look-in since F1 went to ITV. I was astounded though when Lewis Hamilton didn't get the young persons award last year which went to some footballer who'd won nothing and how many championships did Schumacher have to win before getting the Overseas award?

I'm bound to offend some with this, but fishing a sport? A passtime, yes, but hardly sport.Edited by Martin Keene on Friday 12th October 21:18
Fishing does get far more coverage in our Sunday Times" than motorsport ever does. I get quite annoyed when flicking through the paper to see pages of photos of proud fisherboys going "ooh look what I killed, aren't I the big hero"...

Kind of related, but only because this thread got me thinking about it - there's a good chance that Britain could experience a bit of a golden sporting year:
Hamilton - World F1 Champion
Priaulx - World Touring Car Champion
Toseland - World Superbike Champion
England Rugby Team - World Champions
I know that three out of those four are only possibilities, but bloody hell - that would be a turn up for the books!
You are missing Dario Franchitti who has won the IRL championship (and the Indy 500 for good measure).Hamilton - World F1 Champion

The way the Sports Personality of the Year has been rigged these past few years, I wouldn't be surprised to see John Barnes win it for services to ballroom dancing.
Remember you only get to choose from the pre-selected list. So that means no bikers for example. how many times did Carl Fogarty or Doug Lampkin win world championships only to be ignored at these awards? Andy Priaulx? Dario Franchitti? Forget it.
The thing is rigged from the outset just like a Blue Peter phone in. If there is any justice in the world then Ricky Hatton or Lewis Hamilton should probably win it, but I wouldn't count out another inconsequntial (fat) Royal on a horse winning it again.
