Braking distances are a function of the available grip of the tyre, you cant generate more retardation than the tyre can give up, no matter how good your brakes are.

From that you should be able to see the main areas controlling braking distances are tyre construction and compound, downforce, the nature of the surface of the track and weight. Everything else on the car has an influnce too of course, but to a smaller extent.
Spot on - and now that there is a sole supplier of tyres, there's no excuse - harder compounds with less grip, preferably without grooves......

Of course their is also the massive retardation because of the aero.
Every part of f1's problems(excluding political) points to getting rid of most of the aero gubbins.

Maybe it was for the spectators. But the drivers (and sometimes marshalls & spectators) used to die a bit too often.

That was part of it - some of the driving you see now is only because they know if they go off they will likley be ok - some reckless stuff that would have killed 20+ years back.

I see this as a good thing. It means drivers *should* have more confidence and less fear so will try more daring overtakes etc. The reality though is that the aero prevents this.
