Whats your opinions? I think theres a lot of hype about costs and if you really wanna do it youll do it! Ill start by suggesting an ex Dunlop cup Rover 216gti,a spares car off ebay,a cheap trailer and something like a cheapo Mondeo estate or sumut to tow it with. And why not????

VW Golf GTI Cup has to be a very strong contender. Just like in the good old days, you even get extra points for driving your car to the circuit, so you can use it for your shopping as well. Bargain.

Cheapest way is to get a car already done, plus get as many extras as possible, like spare wheels (sets of 4!) and anything you can get really. There are drawbacks to it though, as if you do get the cheapest car out there it will need work, which costs.

Then if your everyday car will tow then that saves the cost of that. If you get a small car you can use a small trailer obviously, and these are cheap; although I found the right trailer at the right price hard to come by.

Get any safety kit you need as Christmas presents and you're away!

I read this week that speads have brought out a basic clubman monoposto I can't wait to see one in the flesh at the autosport show.

I used to race in this championship:

www.mgmetrocup.co.uk

Cars go for £1,000 up to £5,000 depending on class (A is road standard, and B and C are fully race modified). My car was in top condition and was a regular race winner and it only fetched about £2250 with a garage full of spares!

There are some well represented championships with reasonably priced cars running under the 750MC banner or www.fiatracing.com will give you a very well-priced option. Grids have been lower than usual this year but email the co-ordinator and he'll elaborate on 08 regs which should have the grids back up to strength...

750MC Stock Hatch - and buy a car that's already been built.

If you're in the south east - there's the Dunlop Motoring News Saloons, organised by the BARC's South Eastern branch. Cars range from road-going, through modified, Super Tourers, ex-Aussie V8 Supercars, Eurocar V8's, Thundersaloons, and is currently dominated by Rod Birley in his Escort Cosworth WRC.

It's entry fees are some of the cheapest going, for a qually, 8-9 lapper first race, and a 12-15 lapper for the second race. A friendly bunch, with clean racing (in general).

If you prefer spreading your wings a bit more, the BRSCC LMA Eurosaloons caters for a similar range of cars, including some mid-engine'd stuff.

Rob.

I'll assume that SEMSEC are still going at Lydden Hill for mixed saloons (with occasional visits to the Hatch or Snett) so entertain RB's need for trophies without competition and they do a great range of series.... Mini's are/were a good series and as are the Fiesta's or various other Ford series' - if you can get to the Autosport show (Jan) then bending the ears of the BRSCC/BARC/750 will give a good result

As has been said. Buy a car that has already been built as the main cost is in the RRP cost of the parts to build it.

BMW E30 championship, Stock Hatch etc. all good options.
