Afriend of mine is wanting to buy for her husband a days rallying, anyone have any pointers to where he would get the most time in the car, they are based in the south east so I guess he will have to travel. Thanks.

Most time in the car vs Actually learning something.

I went to the Silverstone Rally School. It was under a couple of hundred quid IIRC - a group of 12 people with two cars. Doesn't sound like you get that much time does it? But, believe me, its enough.

They do classroom sessions to teach you a technique. Then you go out, break into two groups, and do exercises in the cars: Powerslides, throttle steering, handbrake turns, the scandinavian flick (pendulum effect). Then its lunch down the pub (no alcohol). In the afternoon you drive their Rally stage. Its a proper, loose surface, rally stage (none of yer tarmac). You do this a couple of times but end up with your instructor co-driving you around the stage in different permutaions. Slidy, slidy fun.

Then your instructor takes you around the stage showing how to do it properly.

It's somewhat humbling when you have been taking cones out all day and your instructor places the car inch perfectly completely sideways.

Probably not the most time in the car - but it's a school and you actually learn something and end up with a real appreciation of what rally drivers actually do.

Can't recommend it enough.

Silverstone has a good reputation, as you say much more of a school than just an experience.

If you're prepared to travel a bit further this one is one of the top schools.

Bill Gwynne (www.billgwynne.com) also very good - a bit of classroom stuff, then several sessions with the instructor co-driving, followed by a final run where the instructor assesses you. A top day out.

Phil Price Ralls school near Knighton. http://philprice.co.uk/NEWWEB6/index.htm

Spent a day there a couple of years ago and you get a lot of time in the cars. Start the day with a briefing session and some theory (such as why its faster to go sideways). Then into a Mk2 escort for one to one training on a short muddy course (if you cant control a slide in one of these you should be shot, they are som much fun). Then throughout the day individuals go off for a session with pace notes and instructor round the 2 mile gravel stage (used by Prodrive amongst others, for testing) in an escort cossie, a few slow laps then a couple of full pace laps.

Late afternoon, we had a several timed laps of the short course in mk2 with a trophy for the fastest.

Last of all, Phil takes you round in the cossie at his full pace, at which point you realise what a complete pussy you are.

All in all, loads of time sideways in a rally car.

Seconded for Phill Price. Bought the missis a day there. Wished I had put me in as well. At least I got a ride in his rocket around the stage at full whack.
