There's no denying he did a good job this/last year, and it can't be taken away from him. But people (even on this thread) hailing him as the best driver out there!!?? On what basis? He won some races in one of only four competitive cars in total? Chuffing ridiculous if you ask me.
He's been doing a good job for bloody ages! Ever since he was a kid in karts FFS! Some of his performances in GP2 absolutely blew me away; class of the field by a mile.

Yes he was lucky to have a very competitive car this year in F1 but that is by no means the only reason he did well. How do you explain him beating the defending champion in equal equipment?

You alude to "screaming girl fans" who no nothing about F1. You appear to not know a great deal either!

And I wonder, given that you seem to think that LH has only 4 F1 race wins to state his 'greatness' what was day one to you for Schumi? Karting? DTM? His first F1 race? His first F1 win?

Over the last 20 years and up to now, I have noticed one thing that most LH bashers and Schumi lovers appear to have in common - ignorance and a lot of it. Sorry for the cuss but it does appear to be THAT clear.

It's it simple glory-hunting? People who have only been following F1/Motor-racing for a few years, even months? The recent influx of Spanish and German fans would be proof of this. I just don;t look forward to they day when the new set of Hamilton glory hunters start acting like c0cks when the next great comes along, whatever their nationality.

I think some people forget that the Hamilton/McLaren relationship is, and always has been, a two-way street - he got the continued support because he was performing well. If he'd been rubbish, McMerc would have dropped him so fast, he would barely have time to notice that he was suddenly wearing a McDonalds uniform and living in a Stevenage council flat.

Hamilton got the fastest time in testing at Jerez today. In his post race comments he doesn't seem boastful at all, so hats off to him.

I see LH was on grooved tyres PDLR was on full '09 slicks, as was DC (although he clearly hasn't lost his edge seeing as he was 1.5secs faster than MW)

1. HAMILTON McLaren 1m19.371s
2. COULTHARD Red Bull 1m19.421s
3. MASSA Ferrari 1m19.761s
4. RAIKKONEN Ferrari 1m19.779s
5. DE LA ROSA McLaren 1m19.887s

  • sigh* I didn't say he was slow, or that the only reason he did well is that he had a competitive car - but would he have had the same success without the car? Surely it's fair to say the only reason he was in a position to win a race is the car... I recognise he's quick (read earlier posts), and that has never been my issue, and as for beating Alonso it's an acheivment. However we both know that a car will always favour a particular driver (it can't perfectly acommodate 2 different driving styles), and my personal opinion (though again I'll get slated) is that could well be part of the whole Ron Dennis/Alonso saga. Fernando expected to be clear number 1, LH was McLaren's REAL interest.
Again (and again...) Lewis did an excellent job, but why are people so unwilling to accept he's had more assistance from early on than almost any other driver?

How can anything be THAT clear? I've expressed some disillusionment towards Hamilton, mentioned I was a Schuey supporter and therefore, on that evidence I know nothing fo F1? rofl

As I need to justify my actions, and just to clarify (maybe I should have been clearer) I supported Schuey from my early days of F1 (ie MY day one). My first memories are of his first season at Benetton (I'm not that old), and my reason for the support then was I'm half German. I guess I was just lucky that he turned out to be what he did.

As for your comment on glory-hunters, I think you're absolutely right. Davidson has put in some stunning perfomances this season taking his equipment into account, but the British public and many motorsport fans couldn't seem to care less - you certainly weren't gonna get an Aguri on the podium (though he was DAMN close in Canda).

He has had a hell of a lot, but then there are another 20 at least who i can think of who have all but been given the same opportunities as LH up to, and in a couple of cases, including F1. Scott Speed, Liuzzi (sp) and all the Red Bull and Renault development drivers. The major difference being that LH's programme was started >10 years ago.

True LH walked into a team on top form. It could so easily have been a bad year for them though. Being one of the best there has ever been (something which I do not believe LH can lay claim to, other than to say he's very well on his way on present form) is not just about what you do 16-19 weekends of the year, it's also about putting yourself in the right place at the right time and maximising your opportunities in addition to 1001 other little areas you have to be on top of.

Oh, was Ecurie Ecosse having a dig then? His subsequent posting of that link suggests he wasn't. For a man using that illustrious team as his pseudonym, I applaud his non-xenophobic atitude to Hamilton.

I think that Ecurie Ecosse and Flemke are the split personalites of the same person wink

Both rather passionate for their team and I've never seen them in the same room at the same time.

Cheers guys

I admit I may have been a bit harsh about Hamilton in the past due to how I perceived his comments / statements.

However, he did a great job in testing AND on grooved tyres, and provided pleasant and modest comments in the interview afterwards, so credit where credit is due.

I think Hamilton and Schumi are really quite similar in a lot of ways, but many of the reasons we disliked the German we see as a good trait in Hamilton:
Schumi was arrogant, Hamilton is Confident. Schumi's starts were agressive, Hamiltons are standing his ground. Many hated the fact that Schumi was supported by a No2 driver, many were screaming that for next season Hamilton should be made No1 driver!

And I can't quite see Schumi saying he wished he could race against Hamilton.
