I think Hamilton and Schumi are really quite similar in a lot of ways, but many of the reasons we disliked the German we see as a good trait in Hamilton:
Schumi was arrogant, Hamilton is Confident. Schumi's starts were agressive, Hamiltons are standing his ground. Many hated the fact that Schumi was supported by a No2 driver, many were screaming that for next season Hamilton should be made No1 driver!
And I can't quite see Schumi saying he wished he could race against Hamilton.
I don't recall anything about ability in that statement.

Nothing about ability. Hamilton said that he would love to race against Schumacher and that it was a shame he retired.

And to Hamilton, it is. Of course he would like to race Schuey. Who wouldn't? Don't really see what is peculiar about this statement.

The thing is, if Schui was an unbeaten driver, and Hamilton said "I'd like to beat him", then you might think that the statement is a bit arrogant. The fact is that a list of people as long as your arm have beaten Schui, so Lewis saying he'd like to join that list isn't really unreasonable.
