Must say, I'm surprised Lewis didn't get it, although he is still just a "nipper" and his time will no doubt come. Probably next year!

But.....I'm really pleased for Calzaghe. Undefeated for 17 years eh? That's good enough reason alone smile

I couldn't afford to vote for him, I spent my last 35 pence on Same Difference on Saturday night.
Just a bit of insider news... the finalists have all recorded the song that will be released in the days before Christmas, as is usual.

Unusually though, the song chosen this year is one written for a duet.....

Remember it's Simon Cowells show, he's mentoring the Gruesome Twosome, put two and two together...??

Worth a couple of quid at the bookies. You heard it here first!!!

OK - I've emboldened the bit I understand above.

Can you clarify?

Yeah, was amused by this on Top Gear, no wonder Alonso threw his rattles out his pram at Macca, cos he couldn't take Lewis out behind the motorhome and threaten to punch the kids lights out if he didn't defer to him on the track could he......biglaugh

Gorvid, to precis the above:

To precis for you!

ITV reality show The X Factor is a singing competition.
Chap called Rhydian is the odds on favourite to win.
Brother/sister duo called Same Difference are quirky underdogs.
All competitors have recorded the same song for release.
The winners has his/their version released.
Song goes to No.1.
Chap called Simon Cowell owns the show, is the producer etc..
Same Simon Cowell is mentoring Same Difference.
Their odds of winning are long, being the underdogs.
Worth a small bet......

Makes me sick: the guy's good looking, can sing, play the piano and is a bit handy on a bike - everything I'm not. I hate him. hehe

I'm glad Calzaghe won as he certainly hasn't ever had the pay day Hatton had the other day as far as I know. Certainly a worthy winner. As said, Lewis has many years ahead to win it.

Oh, fishing is the biggest "participation" sport in the UK. I would guess that football is the biggest spectator sport.

OK, define "sport".

Hemmingway said that "there are only three sports. Mountaineering, Motor Racing and Bull Fighting. All the rest are merely games."

So what is it about fishing that makes it NOT a sport? I say that football is not a sport. I say it's only a game.

fishing is bloke sitting down, waiting for hour for something else ( ie the fish) to do something ( ie bite his bait)... wilst I can see that this would be rivetingfor some......
to m its just boring, at least there is a cheap version of it, ie if you can't afford the gear, just sit down by some water anyway, its axactly the same feeling!!

I think

Is it?

Do you really think that's all there is to it?

What about match fishing? What about fly fishing?

Note: I'm not defending fishing because I am an avid fan bit because I want to know why people say it isn't a sport, yet can quite happily accept that something like darts is.

This is a new thread surely?

But how is a sport? Man competing vs fish?
Man with lots of specialist equipment......... against a fish.

Fishing in a competition is not a sports competition, it's just a bunch of men vs a bunch of fish.

Fishing would be more of an art than a sport surely? Applying knowledge and experience to achieve something rather than a honed physical skill.

Maybe. But if fishing is a sport (is it?) then surely fishermen (anglers?) are eligible for the SPOTY competition?

Yeah, I know, if the attempt to get back on topic was any more weak it would be a fortnight

Sounds like a good definition to me. I would agree that fishing is more of an art than a sport.

So, is the definition of a sport something that requires a honed physical skill? What about martial arts? They are as their name suggests, arts. Are they also sports? Does there have to be an element of competition to make it a sport?

If you can't define what a sport is then how do you define a sportsman and therefore eligibility for SPOTY?

Whew, I'm glad you qualified that - I was trying to picture Hamilton Calzaghe and Hatton in the recording studio together working on the harmonies for "Bridge Over Troubled Water"

Truly a martial art cannot be a sport. But they can be adapted to be a sport.
