An official starting point would be talking to James Tucker of the EERC. The contact details etc are at www.eerc.co.uk

Or you could not talk to him and do it yourself!

simple really, you need a reliable race car about £20k budget minimum (on top of the car) and 3 other drivers who can drive sensibly on the black stuff, a bit of luck!
It is great fun!

It can't be that expensive, on top of the car for one race eek

I'm looking at this too in '08 (and future years) and can't see how it can possibly cost that much. Would anyone like to shed any light? confused

Entry fees, tyres, pads, fuel. If nothing goes wrong I recon about £8, so what am I missing? I am talking about the cost to enter and race, not enter and win though.

Yes - you forgot about the costs of rebuilding/renewing everything on the car before the race to give it a chance of finishing, a comprehensive spares package, a crew of guys who will need to be housed, fed and watered for three days and the cost of a rebuild of the major mechanical parts after the race.

£20k is the cheap end of the budget scale

I've now had a chat with a couple of the 2007 drivers and it appears you are correct. £20k is the cheap end.

Best I get shmoozing potential sponsors if I have any chance of making the 2008 grid smile

Tyres alone could easily come to more than £8k. We fit a new set every fuel stop (say 2 hours for the maths), a couple of sets for practice etc and you`re looking at 12-14 sets at circa £1k per set. Even if we double stint the tyres or you have a car that will do 3 hours on a tank you`re looking at 6-8 sets plus practice / wets.

Yep. It's certainly not a cheap day out smile

We'd definately double stint the tyres if possible. We won't be competetive so there's no point in spending to gain an extra second or two a lap. We do however want to finish with the car intact to fight another day.

If it's as enjoyable as I expect, the car could then maybe remain an endurance racer and be developed as such.

I think it may yet go this way (which is no bad thing) rather than convert my Kumho car into a Britcar for one or two events a year.

It'll depend hugely on the sponsorship we can pull in over the next few months.

I have done the 2cv 24 hour race for the past few years and it is massive fun, and you can buy a drive for under £1,000 all in. It is on August 10th next year.

After speaking to a few of those potentially involved, Britcar still looks like a goer, but for £1000 all in, I think everyone in the Britcar team should do this as an eye-opener beforehand to get our heads around what's involved.

I've done a couple of 24hr kart events in the past and they're hard work so I'm expecting much more at this level.

This is going to sound pretty unbelievable but discounting the entry fee which was paid by a sponsor, 4 of us did the whole meeting for less than £500 each. OK we only managed just over 300 laps and were the last classified finishers so did save on fuel and tyres but it can be done. This is not taking into account an engine freshen up and we removed the dog box and ran a roadcar box for reliability but includes prep work such as new discs/pads etc.
We started out with 5 sets of part worns, the newest and best of which had done the 2x 45 min Dutch Supercar races 2 years ago!
A fuel problem meant that we had to remove and clean out the injectors at every stop so put paid to any kind of result but when the old thing was running right she managed fastest lap in class.
We wouldn't have done it without the help of the teams in the garage with us and a fair dose of good luck so thanks again.
The Top Gear coverage did a good job of sharing the experience and can only help to make the event bigger and better next year.
I don't think we can ever do it again for the same money but hope we can get an entry for '08 and have another go.
To have been involved with such an event was an incredible experience, to finish it emotional to say the least and if you can find a way to do it on whatever budget then you must!!!

That's pretty much the reason we want to do it. After the idea was suggested to me I called my best mate who start Caterham racing this year and without hesitation he wanted to do it. The money is an inconvenience, but if we can both gain sponsorship for untelevised club racing, I'm sure we can raise a few quid for this smile

That's an amazing budget that you completed it on and I'm impressed yes As I plan to use my race car again after so need to include the engine refresh, I expect our expenditure to go a tad higher.

Well, if anyone wants pitcrew that are happy to look after their own accomodation/food costs post up a thread about it here, as I'm not racing that weekend and would love to get involved.

Being realistic I think if we can manage to run for around 2k each we will be doing well, this would be with the entry paid again which is looking good. With that sort of money we could even eat next timeyum
We had actually worked on around 1k each this year and were pleasantly surprised when we had so much change, although would have rather have had more laps instead.
That being said there were some drives available in reliable cars with very well run and experienced teams for less than 4k so without sponsorship this is quite a sensible way to go, just look at where some of the arrive and drive cars finished in class!
Either way you know you've got to do it!!!
