Slightly off topic, but has anyone used one of these before?

(sequential shifter that bolts onto a H gate)

Looks great in the videos - but is it really any good?

yep i bought one on a whim off US ebay but bolted it to the box but it baulked. its a bit of a fiddly phaff type job to get it set correctly and as mine was s/hand with no instructions, i had to 'play' with it to get it right. That said, i didnt get chance to run it at a test day, so havent used it in anger for fear of it screwing up a run at an event. Bit of fun, but bit heavy and no huuge advantage as its still bolted to a synchro box (still have to use the clutch). be great on a dog box though. i do intend to get it tried properly before season starts, will let you know how it goes.

That's what I figured.. Seems like more of a gimmick than a genuinely useful gadget..

I would be very interested to hear how you get on with it though (once you have a chance to try it properly..)

Cheers,
Dylan

my reasoning for buying it (yeah other than being a gadget freak..) is that i tend to exert sideloads on the gear lever when cornering (holding on for grim-death) and have pulled the lever too far left or right and miss shifted in the past, and the ikeya shift would sort that i guess (as would be being less bloody ham-fistedbiglaugh)
will let you know how i get on. its on the list of pre-season 'to-do's'....

a cheaper option might have been an Armtech speed shift. this is a little black box that incorporates a rev limiter, shift lights and a full throttle gear change.
the full throttle gear change worked very well on the mini, with very quick gear changes, and you program where the revs drop back to when you dip the clutch (ideally so you are still on cam), the only draw back was that it was a little hard on the baulk rings.

to save on gearbox rebuilds every couple of years a dog box was then fitted.

had one of those on a previous car, very basic but great value. My current ecu covers all that with different delays programmable for each gear change.

Nice one - definitely getting one of those!

Seems like fantastic value for money :-)

The best reason for having straight cut gears in your gearbox, is that helical ones are fiendishly expensive to have made to order. If you're going to get helical gears made, then you really want to make a batch of gears all the same.

If you want a ratio that you can't get, then straight cut gears are likely to be the option that you choose.

Is it worth it? I guess it depends how much you want a specific ratio. If the ratio that you have is costing you the race, then it's probably worth geting the one you need.
