Neil, we are going to have to get our post in synch
Know what you are saying boys, but its very difficult as you know. I want the best for my carrier as you can well understand, so I don't need any back stabbing or cheaing threads as I am not a cheat, i am only looking for help and a constructive input from you all. Mickey. I watched the Oulton race and you didn't look stretched - it was a Saturday afternoon cruise. That might be because you are so good that you were on the ragged edge but your driving style is incredibly smooth. In contrast, Marc Hockin out at the front with a huge cushion, was visibly pushing himself and the car. Ok that's just one race and you just needed to bank some points...
.... but my point is that you have to seek out opportunities to challenge yourself, benchmark yourself against the best competition you can find and constantly improve. That isn't going to happen in Class B or C of the TVR series, you have more chance of in it 'A' and will be guaranteed it in something like FF or FR
Mickey I dont think this year that anyone has suggested your car was anything but 100% legal. The problem was the regs didnt quite work, and that has been addressed for 2009. The V8's in C was always a gamble and it didnt really work. The idea was people would take stock road trim v8 cars and drop a cage seat and harness in them and ( wedge and chim) and race them against full race stripped out v6 car. unfortunately the regs didnt really reflect the ( probably flawed ) idea, and people ( not unexpectedly) built cars to the letter of the rules, nothing wrong with that, but it wasn't the idea.
If all you wanted to achieve was a blinding win in the class then you had the perfect car the talent to pilot it to an almost perfect score, and you achieved that with no problem.
if your aim was to prove your driving talent, then you needed something more evenly matched, to take away the perceived advantage the car had and let your talent show through. the car masked your achievement this year which is not what you want.
For 2009, IF you stay with the TVR series (which i would like to see you in) then to get noticed you need to be up the front, which probably means a stock class A Tuscan, there does seem to be a number of original spec tuscans around, and there are certainly plenty of historical lap times to give you a bench mark against. However as Andy and others have said there are other places where you would get noticed more if you won than the TVR's and would aid a career better. As in all motorsport though Its all going to require lots of cash, so at the end of the day your going to need to be very blunt on how much folding you can raise, and how far your skill set will get you..
what ever your chosen path, good luck....... you'll need it :-)
G
p.s. if its any consolation people have moaned about my car 24/7 as well !!!!

So this thread is finding out who the people that moaned about our car this year. What ever you say, we built the car to the regs in this year, if you buy or build a car MAKE sure your you read the regs as we did and don't moan when you are beaten in class. Ntel, I was offered your car in 06 but did not purchase it from HB plainly cos it was not fast enough for the class rule's. Not having a go but we read the rule's corectly and won the class. John.
I think you have the wrong end of the stick. I'll answer that, properly, when I get back from work later.Edited by Mick G Star on Sunday 26th October 20:55

I can't afford to do anything else, so just going to run as is. Hence being a little pissed off. Esp. as I've not got sponsors at all, plus all ready spent more than budgeted for. If I spend any more on the car, won't have the money for the entry fee's
But as I've not raced before for me its more about taking part and getting used to the car, and racing etc. would have nice to have been able to get a few podiums, once I get into it. Still might one if there are a lot of DNF, but that's not how you want to win.
Does give me room to improve though, also it should not be too bad if they reduce the BHP/PT for class B.
Can't do too much, esp. as I'm running a TL77 gearbox.

Leigh - I wouldnt worry about podiums etc in your first year. I know its probably a bitter pill to swallow when you built your car to the C regs, but this year I came out with the intention of enjoying myself. I had no goals or aspriations to end up on any podiums and it really wasnt until the last couple of races at Oulton when I started getting used to the car that I could genuinely push for those poitions.
You will be amazed how you will improve over the season. I genuinely wouldnt worry too much about positions to start with, you will get points for finishes and being at the races ( which is what I did) as Time goes on and more money becomes available to you then you can start thinking about podiums, however Im sure by then you will have some cups on the sideboard.
Just go out and enjoy yourself...
eta - by the way - whats with this "Ex Marc Hockin Griff". I got it to second in class I'll have you know

As said I'm mainly doing this for fun, and to get experience, plus don't want to change car, as anything think more than it is now will just make it unreliable and costly. But wanted a car that was going to be competitive, plus I had a lot of support when I started plus no one gave me any warning at the time. most people wanted someone else with a v8 to compete against Micky
I don't think I've built the car unfairly to the rules,
It's a 4.0 mainly due to wanting a X-bolted block, so it strong and has the latest oil pump. (it's top hatted but that's just for reliability and the fact I bought a lemon than needed fixing)
It's got standard crank / pistons etc. (just balanced)
It's running stock heads with no mods just re-seated and new springs.
It's running a fast road cam. as did not want to get pocketed pistons and double valve guides etc.
It's got a custom Induction due to space limits. (it's still a single plenum)
Plus its running a LT77 gearbox.
Most of this was done so it was similar to my road car. this way it would be easier to get used to plus I'd have spares,
Also having another Rv8 wedge running it may make a some of the other wedge v8 guys to think about joining in, as I do think it good for the series to show a how a car can progression is the series.
Yes it in, and working, well it's way too good even with the adjuster on hard. (on hard it should increase resistance, but it's not)
So I've currently got it connected via a push switch so it only works when I hold the button in.
I've got the spec's so need to put my scope on it to see if it reading what it should do.
only managed to get the garage sorted and the car back in, last weekend. will take the door back off again this weekend so I have more access. and can do some tests with the garage door closed.
As need to get the Emerald - DL1 - Dash2 links working. then I'll be able to see if it's getting too hot.
Plus be able to record some mixture / Rev's onto the DL1.

hi tvrleigh
i was reading about your tasmin monsterproject.
i have a project of my own...an '81 tasmin s1 fhc 280...but my intention is to make it roadworthy.
main problem is that i don't have a V5 document....you wouldn't happen to have one of those doc's in a table drawer or something....if you do so and you're not doing anything with it....let me know..than maybe i can get it to go on a dutch licenseplate and go full throttle!!!
thx in advance

Well got the engine in the 280 (well Graham's spare 350 engine as mine is still in the shop) and the engine brackets tacked into place, need to do the gearbox mounts, and then take it all out and weld it fully.
Had to shorten the SD1 engine mounts to make it fit. will take pic's of the engine to chassis mounts once the engine is out again.
See pic's

Now Have made the new Brace and fitted.
Also I managed to find a Late style Thor Front Cover, that has the angled Oil filter, so we swapped this over, and can now fit a full size oil filter, and also fit a sandwich plate, makes it a lot easier than fitting a remote, esp as it would have to pass the exhaust, and make the oil hot.
Fitted some Head shielding the Cables near the Exhaust, as the cable wrap had melted.
Fitted plug heat shields (still not sure if this is a good idea of not), and new leads.
Re-designed the induction, too move it away from the Exhaust.
Painted most of the fabricated parts, that we did not have time to do last year.
Fitted a Oil Temp and pressure sensor. and backup Water Temp sender, need to link these to the Emerald DL1 etc.
Got the Emerald talking to the DL1 and Dash2. (still need to sort some bugs out.)
Its all up and running again. but has decided not to idle when warm.

Some Picture of above mods
New air temp sensor
Skimmed base
new small race alternator
ECU and logger all working
new lights fixed to the body not the removable front end
new ignition pointer
Cable Heat Shield
New induction take 2 with heat shield
All finished, with new suspension Brace.
