It may be a repost, but it's a great shot. Is that Spa? Any more info on the car and driver for those of us with less encyclopedic knowledge?

A bit of Googling says it's Peter Gethin in a McLaren M14A. I don't think it's Spa TBH, I reckon the straight before Eau Rouge is longer than in the pic.

I thought the same about the straight, but just wondered if it was a trick of the light.

Thanks for the research.

[Edit]
Further research indicates it may be the Montjuïc circuit in Spain. The opening round of the 1971 season.

Bingo!

Lovely place for a race. I've always wanted to have a mooch around the park but I'm yet to make it to BCN.

The operators are pressing down too hard on the hand controls - the cars have come off the electric guide rails.

I visited in 2012 while I was over that way for the Catalan MotoGP. I wrote fairly extensively about the experience and there are plenty of photos too: http://www.motorcardiaries.co.uk/2012/montjuic-par...

Hope you enjoy and do ensure you visit yourself at some point - it's wonderful.

Total pleasure. Catalunya's actually a very pleasant place to watch racing, though lacking a little of Montjuic's jeopardy...

This video puts it on context far more clearly:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBHzz5NmgG0
(skip to 1:07)

I had real trouble convincing myself it wasnt the run down from the tunnel to the chicane at first! What threw me was the fact that the cars have to enter left and leave right in that shot, and with the current left-right-right-left chicane that is only possible going into it, not out.

I've managed to dig up an older map that shows the chicane used to be just a left-right:

Current:

It also seems that Tabac in the 1970 video is uphill, and the bend is slightly tighter. Therefore, and I'm happy to be proved wrong on this, I think they are using a different bit of road. The 2 possibilities are either - different road, or several hundred feet of the road between the chicane and Tabac has since been raised by 15 feet - rather unlikely.

By looking at Monaco on Google earth, it would appear that the road along the harbour there has a main road, and another bit of parallel road that dips down and runs level with the yacht moorings all the way along until Tabac. In the original form of left-right, the chicane would deposit you on the low road where you dip down, then come back up to rejoin the level at the corner. In the current form, the extra right-left of the chicane brings you back onto the main road that runs level - in the photograph this will be along the top of the wall on the left of the frame.

Sherlock, out bowtie

Well selected. From the days when you drank the champagne - no puerile spraying and PR-speak at the post-race interviews. RIP Black Jack.

(I wonder what he would have made of today's F1 and all the BS with PR and sponsors - I doubt if he would have been the sponsor's dream, he would have said it exactly as he thought.)
