Here's a good one I've dragged up from the murky depths of my memory - this Jeep won a WRC round!

Considering the WRC didnt even exist in 1972 then that article is being rather 'liberal' with the facts......http://www.moparmagazine.com/2009/jan-feb/press_on...

After Monkeys blog on retro rally cars I've been watching loads of group B & rallying on youtube then I came across this.

A restored Lancia ECV using original parts - I only ever saw pics of this car after group B (& thne group S ) was canned, so it is amazing to see it in action.

It was a round of the International Championship for Manufacturers, equivalent to the WRC at the time along with the European RC.Don't even start to try to work out top flight sports cars...

I worked on that car for the following owner! He raced it as a Stratos but did own a similar set up with AC ME3000 bodywork on it.
The stratos car was a March 832 chassis with BMW M12 engine and Hewland FG300 (dodgy memory??) gearbox.
The car was later returned to 832 original bodywork with the carbon top section to the tub refitted. I have pictures of before and after somewhere but all on old skool photo paper so will have to scan them!!
I am happy to be corrected, but pleased that there were a few grains of truth behind what I remembered. I never saw these two cars race against each other which was a real shame because they were both unbeatable every time I saw them. It would be interesting to see those pictures. The stratos car was a March 832 chassis with BMW M12 engine and Hewland FG300 (dodgy memory??) gearbox.

Lancia Autobianchi A112 Abarth. I remember a lot of these on the RAC Rally years ago. They were running last on the road and all of them driving like men possessed!

I was marshalling the startline for RallyCross at Brands and remember the TVS thing well. It was IIRC, broadcast on Monday evenings over 5 weeks in February - made to look like it was a recording of what happened the previous Sunday.
In actual fact, it was recorded over two mid-week days in early January. It was a closed event so no spectators, Drivers got paid to turn up and even the marshals got a tenner, fed, watered and some goodies - very rare back then.
The races weren't exactly staged but we did have to re-run a few as they weren't exciting enough. One race (for reasons I can't really recall) Will Gollop was in his 6R4 at the back of a grid of mainly standard Novas, Metros and Fiestas. When the lights turned green, he just shot through the pack and pretty much lapped them all by the end of the race - not bad considering each race was only 2 and half laps. The director asked for the race to be re-run asked Gollop if he could make it look a bit more difficult. He "stalled" it on the grid and "couldn't find the right gear". Spun a couple of times, took Druids at a right angle to the edge of the track and still won but miles.
Lack of spectators meant that marshals, mechanics, drivers, caterers... all had to double for a crowd.
I was living in Upminster at the time, just a smidge out of the TVS region so never got to see the final product so if anyone has a tape!!!
Sorry to bump a very old thread but Steve - you may want to have a look at this channel as some of the old TVS winter stuff is being uploaded on here - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZ3mBosyMdEokOpeq...In actual fact, it was recorded over two mid-week days in early January. Cracking thread all round by the way - will think of some stuff to add as I have an odd interest in obscure cars and in motorsport's glorious failures!
The Manic Beattie hillclimber. 1700 BDT turbo with 4 wheel drive and a helicopter turbine to boot...Not sure of the weight but imagine it's pretty light too.

This was an unusual one Per Eklund in a Nissan Micra super 1.0 turbo
He did the RAC for Nissan in 88.
He was into the top 10 in the early stages and ended up 21st over all not bad in a field of mainly 4 wd and larger capacity cars in his 990cc works Micra!
It was normal on the Safari Rally to not wear full fireproofs and helmets, see Colin above. That picture of Per may be on a transit section, i think that's a picture from the Scottish rally. Lots of gravel link sections on that.He did the RAC for Nissan in 88.

I very much doubt the above photo was taken on the RAC as it was VERY snowy that year. That car was badged as the Nissan March (the Japanese name for the Micra) and the legendary Eklund did indeed work wonders with it, despite being especially frozen by the end of the rally after a low branch smashed its rear screen!

The photo was from the Scottish not the RAC (I couldn't find a good photo of it on the rac)Have we done this yet?
