have joined woolbridge MC & they are running a Novice Class, 'W', which I will be starting in then probably move into a competitive class at the next event I enter. The guys at Woolbridge have been really helpful, really appreciated when you're starting out with NO idea what you're doing!

andye30m3 - what Clio did you run? Do you still run it or have you changed? How did you get on with it, any advice/suggestions etc for me regarding set up etc?

I ran a phase 1 172 which I upgraded to an integra type R towards the end of last year. since then I've changed to a S2000 as I fancied trying RWD.

Last year I ran in the standard production class so didn't make any mod's to the clio other than some decent tyres, last year we were only allowed to run list 1A so I went for Yokohama paradas although this year R888's etc are allowed. Only other thing I did was to fit some decent pads, went for ferodo DS2500 which worked well on the clio.

thanks, this 172 Cup has been upgraded with grooved discs front & rear with I think EBC pads. It does have cheapo tyres on the front with Contis on the rear so they are going to need sorting before I use it much! I seriously considered an Integra Type R but couldn't live with that revvy engine as it will also be used as a 2nd road car. Have heard that the S2000 would make a great hillclimb/sprint car so good luck with it! Hoping to get a local garage to check for failed engine mount on Tuesday as there seems to be some knocking under hard acceleration, especially in 1st gear. Could do with finding a spare wheel as the Cups don't come with one, also need to replace the missing front splitter if anybody can help?

I'd have thought a decent set of tyres is a must.

I've done two sprints in the S2000 so far, both at north weald and expect I'd have been quicker in the integra but I'm still getting used to rwd.

First one I was 5th in class out of 10th so was quite happy as it was a new track, new car and 2 people in front were on road legal slicks, I was on some fairly old bridgstones.

second one was today, came 11th out of 20 in class but only managed 1 run as the engine warning light came on so I stopped, was not in the best frame of mind as I managed to also hit a deer about 1km from the circuit on the way there, so all in all it was a fairly bad day!

Still can't wait for Goodwood at the end of the month, Hopefully they'll be some decent weather.

I saw that dead deer and we joked about the caterers scraping it up for the burgers! had no idea it was so fresh and that a competitor had hit it. Much damage to the car? was it the casue of the warning light?
Your one timed run though was only 4 1/10ths slower than my best in the race Spider (which couldnt cope with the bumps- far too stiff) so on the whole it was pretty good given you didnt have the chance to improve on it.

hopefully the deer didn't cause much damage, guess it couldn't have if you competed in it after? Good luck with the engine light & fingers crossed your luck improves by the time you get to Goodwood! If I manage to get mid-field on my 1st event especially after having only 3 weeks with the car I will be very happy!

Luckily the deer seams to have only damaged the front bumper, could have been a lot more expensive if it had damaged the light and wing as well.

Still managed to run just tank taped up the front bumper, it wasn't going to cause any issues.

Just off to see if I can get this engine warning light sorted out.

The 'Standard' class is new I think for this year. Should be interesting to see if it proves popular for newcomers. They didn't have that when I started 2 years ago.

Are you sure?

I ran in the standard class last year but it seams to have been replaced with 'road going production' this year which allows for a few mods.

as a beginner this is all very confusing but it strikes me that each Motor Club / event seems to have slightly different classes? Guess I'll find out more when I come out of Woolbridge 'W' Class for complete novices or compete at another venue run by a different club.

Dave,

I'd love to know how you get along.

Also curious about the various costs involved.

The whole ASWMC (South West) clubs run class A1~4 which is series production road car class (though allows for a fair amount of mods. In fact we are often quicker than the modified class!)

The W class as I understand it is a special addition which is strictly standard, unmodified cars and doesn't count towards championships etc. It is specifically designed to allow people to have a go without feeling like they have to invest too much money at the outset. I think it is ideal to begin with and it should be good fun. I do however feel you will quickly want to move to the A classes if you get the bug smile especially if you start getting close to their times!

I can really associate with the whole feeling of utter confusion and general lack of available information. The only real way to understand what on earth is going on is to turn up and see what happens. It starts to make sense once you've done it!

Good luck. Only 17 days to go.....and counting smile

kinky, outlay so far: MSA Nat.B Speed License £37.00, Woolbridge Motor Club membership £15.00, Car!, helmet - already had, fireproof overalls/gloves approx £360.00, 2 day event fee £160 (£80 per day). Thats about it so far really

SClarke, think you're right about not counting towards championship etc in Class W & you're almost certainly right about getting the bug! Looking forward to turning up & seeing what happens, also meeting some of the people that have offered help & advice especially Tony & Pam @ Woolbridge MC.

Would ideally like to enter a Westfield I think so watch this space...

First event is at Wiscombe Park then? Nice hill, I quite often do course control there at the "Five Clubs" event in September.

another update, just ordered 2 x Toyo T1-R tyres for the front - they came highly recommended by K-Tec Racing for the 172 Cup. My local (well used!) tyre fitters also recommended them having used them himself. My local garage (ex-Renault technician handily!) has confirmed the bottom stabiliser arm is knackered so I have just ordered an uprated item with Poly bushes from K-Tec, hopefully get this & the tyres fitted early next week. Also spoke to K-Tec about their Stealth exhausts but my wallet has had enough for one month! All I need know is a timing strut & I think I'm ready to hillclimb!
