The Zonda R was originally built after one of Pagani's road car customers requested a more hard core track orientated version of his road going Zonda F. Pagani only agreed to build it if he could find five other customers to cover the development costs, in the end he found 15. The Zonda R was not built to comply with any current race series regulations so is unlikely ever to be seen in a competitive race which is a shame. But 2 racing Zonda's based on the road cars do exist and compete on a regular basis.

The road going F Clubsport up until a year or so ago did hold the road car record, but then the Radical turned up

It’s a shame these cars are unlikely to be seen very often if only down to the sheer noise they make making them unsuitable for the majority of track days. There again most owners will likely be rich enough to hire a track out for themselves when they get an urge for a drive.

One of the truly great cars along with the road going F Clubsport, one day one will be mine wink

I think the rules for "fastest Road car lap" should include driving to and from the circuit, buying a weeks shopping on the way back from a supermarket and getting a Happy Meal at a DriveThru.

As an aside, who was driving the Zonda? Top marks to anyone who Photoshops Lewis Hamilton into one giving the bird out the window to Alonso in the 599 :-)
the radicals 6m 48 did actually include driving from england tot he track and back.

i expect Radical to be back with in the month to have another go.

sorry Pagani just don;t impress me,

I think it is fantastic! I was lucky enough to be in the paddock when they pushed the car (I know not a great advert) back in last year at Goodwood. I was stood there sandwiched between a Lambo SV and the Zonda as they lifted the rear clam off, propped it against a wall, fiddled around a bit and then fired it up. I have to say the noise and smell was absolutely amazing. Instantly smitten and yes if I had that kind of money that car (or maybe a Zonda F) is top of my list above anything else.

Irrelevant car ... yes; irrelevant record ... yes; but should we still be impressed and congratulate the Pagani team all the same ... absolutely! It certainly brought a smile to my face and surely that's what these fantasy cars are all about

One other thing I would like to know - I seem to recall reading last year that when the factory went for a 'ring record they had to borrow a car - anyone know if this was a customer or factory car? I assume the latter but would be interested to know, after all you have to be a brave man to let someone rag your own car costing that much round the 'ring!

To all the Radical supporters just how is a Radical like a road car. Just a tin can with a hole for the driver. The Pagani is based on a real true road car you can own and although beauty is subjective Radical is plug ugly compared to any Zonda.

How would you even get that on a trailer to get it to the track?

Functionally beautiful for me (geeky engineer who likes aerodynamics tongue out). Each part is there and in it's shape to move the air for a purpose thumbup

does it matter? look at and listen at it.

Just be thankful cars like this are being made. None of us will ever have one so its a mute point about driving it on the road.

James here:

All I'll remember about Pagani is when on a road trip in 03 in only the 7th TVR T350c I dropped in off pat at the Pagani Factory. Horasi was out but I did get a full guided tour which I will remember for some time. The man himself did turn up just as we were leaving and did actually spend some time looking over the T350 outside before coming in.

Great car.....

1. The Zonda is not road legal...
I think I would take the 962 and the 800 grand saving!
Where do I put my Tesco shopping in the 962getmecoat
What's the point in putting shopping in a Zonda or Ferrari that you can't take it home in, even if they have a "boot"?
I'd prefer the 956/962 too

Horatio - is a genius. The most gifted, tasteful and talented automotive designer cum engineer since, well, Jim Hall (!) I honestly don't understand how he accomplishes so much. He must never sleep, lives 30 hour days, and inspire every one around him to do the same. Just magic.
Zonda R (in batmobile colours) - is simply raising the bar on the most beautiful car in the world (well, except for my Ford GT (remake) of course)
But this is simply cheating. The 599GTO is street legal. This simply isn't. I'm sure it could be, but why total a few if you're building less than 20? Besides, most owners will take them on the street and simply pay the penalties. Or so I suspect.
Nonetheless, I applaud them for taking a shot.
