Reuters said:
Kubica enters new phase on road to recovery.

Polish Formula One driver Robert Kubica had a further small operation on Tuesday as he entered a new phase of rehabilitation three months after his career-threatening rally accident.

His Renault team said on their website (www.lotusrenaultgp.com) that doctors now considered the first stage of the driver's recovery to be finished.

"Thanks to Robert's strength and to a highly attentive medical plan, the delicate period was overcome positively and without any complications," they said.

"With the progress of his recovery, we are now entering the second phase, which is heavy rehabilitation aimed to restore functionality."

Kubica spent two months in hospital after suffering life-threatening arm, leg and hand injuries while competing in a minor rally in Italy in early February.

The Renault statement added: "More small operations are planned to remove the unavoidable adhesions that are affecting the functionality of his forearm and elbow muscles.

"This is considered routine practice. The first one was done today and everything went according to plan."

Renault team boss Eric Boullier went to visit Kubica in Italy after Sunday's Turkish Grand Prix and reported that the doctors were pleasantly surprised by the improvement in the 26-year-old's condition.

He said Kubica had been keeping in regular contact with his engineers about developments at the team.

"Now, it is a matter of time and, even if patience isn't Robert's first quality, he is fully aware that rehabilitation could be quite a long process," said Boullier.

The Frenchman warned earlier this month it could be mid-June before the team had a clearer picture of Kubica's prospects.

Germany's Nick Heidfeld is standing in for the Polish driver at Renault alongside Russian Vitaly Petrov.

More good news. Would have loved to see Robert at Monaco this year, look how good he was in the Renault last year around here.

All the stories in the media about a comeback are interesting as I've heard the polar opposite from very close sources.

The media stories all seem to emanate from Daniele Morelli, RK's manager. Morelli "would say that, wouldn't he"; if he talks down his client's chances of getting back into F1 in 2011 then he may be talking down the chances of RK ever coming back - which would be bad for bother manager and client.

Not sure how recent they are, but looking at pictures someone posted on Twitter of Robert out and about on crutches, that arm/hand looks like it's got a long way to go in the healing stakes before it's strong and mobile enough to contemplate controlling an F1 car frown

I don't think he'll ever race again in F1.
Great shame frown

from the injuries i'd say it's unlikely but not impossible - however, if anyone can recover, i'd say kubi with his strength (and access to the best medical facilities) can.

here's hoping - really don't expect to see anything of him in 2012 but possibly the year after? of course, another question if he's physically able to drive a car at competitive speeds is if he still has the reactions and mental capacity etc after 2 years away from any kind of racing

I think Kubica needs plenty of time away from the media as he is getting better.
Bit st whoever is camping outside his place taking pictures of him.

I really hope he gets better.

He's not been out of hospital long. And considering he nearly lost the lower arm it's looking pretty bloody good. Give him time.

The natural process of the bone remodelling stage of healing can take several years where the healed bones strengthen in specific area when force is exerted on them - In someone fit and health, and provided healing has been successfull there is no reason why they can't make a full recovery. It does however require time and appropriate exercise/physio. The scar is almost certainly where orthopaedic surgery has been performed and the brace holds the bones in place as they go through the "repair" stage of bone healing - Bone must be kept imobilised at this stage to allow ossification (hardening) - What I'm basically saying is the picture looks dramatic but it actually is fairly common for this sort of equipment to be used during the recovery period.

Plus they are out of date and RK is walking fine without any aid now.

His first public appearance after the crash is tomorrow: LINK

He's still only 26, so even if he takes a year or two out, I think he can be racing again. Considering the crash he had, it's good to see him up and about.

Good luck to him.

Even if he's not racing, he'll be in an F1 car on a test.

He's actually in hospital for another operation today - so don't think he's making a public appearance.

His manager says he won't be driving this year - but might make an appearance at Brazil - mixed messages. And i would think it's more to do with trying to keep his seat in 2012 a possibility.

I'll put £10 on it that he's not in an F1 car this year. But he'll be in a sim by September. Renault will want to know by then if there's any chance that he'll make it back to F1.

I'll bet he never drives competitively in F1 again. The quality of the drivers a the front is so high that the slightest loss of mobility in the arm/hand is going to affect him being competitive.
