Fort Augustus to Inverness on the quiet side of the Loch is one of my favourites, another fairly short but great run is from Drumnadrochit to Beauly.
Dava moor, Nairn to Grantown on Spey is fantastic in either direction.
Struie if you are heading North, from Skiach to Ardgay then up past Spinningdale is a far better option than the A9 and you come out at the north end of the Dornoch bridge where the A9 becomes a bit more interesting, watch out for the camera vans at the Mound just south of Golspie

AKA the 'the old military road'

I run this in the summer in my Lancer. It's what it was built for biggrin (sensibly of course). Also a bikers Mecca.

Take in some of the best scenery this land has to offer and 80 plus miles of fun. A rival for Mr Carters neck of the woods perhaps? Hmmm maybe not....

In a couple of months time I'll be taking in five of the eight highest roads in Scotland (numbers 1/2/3/6/8).
I've done Bealach na Ba before but not this route from to Inverness to Perth - B865/B9006/B9091/B9090/A939/B976/A93/A923/A9.

The B roads - some great little roads .Few years ago I was going up north to Fort William every month for a week ,and possibly every day to Inverness .I got tired of the summertime "scenic gourmets" ( and it took me out closer to New Craig hospital),travelling nose to tail on Ness side and used these roads .Some are almost single track .Took me back a few years .

Phew - never seen mist like that up north . But that road, reminds me of parts of the Fort Wiliam / Mallaig road way back in the 60/70's

Id LOVE to convince the wife a) I can drive and b) a road trip is a good idea just to go on that!!!!!
For some reason anything over 60mph scares her into some bumbling idiot who will point out the moon to make sure you dont drive into it furious

Driving sensibly, how long does it take you to get home from Inverness on that road Mr Carter?

I'm planning a little run on Friday but i need to be back in town for an appointment in the afternoon.

...watch out nearer the larger places like Ullapool, Gairloch, Kyle, Lairg etc
Ullapool pop 1300
Gairloch pop 650
Kyle pop 739
Lairg pop700

My school had more pupils than three of those places!

I fking love the road from Gairloch to Ullapool.

I did that with my Dad on our motorbikes last summer. it looked exactly like that but with added 50mph gusts of wind making it a bit er, 'challenging'. Lunch was worth it on the other side though smile

Tempted, but at night, I miss out on the view.Leave her at bottom, and come back to cold shoulder -NA. I wish I could get a photo of the Mallaig veg hill -it's more like a hill climb site . Must be maximum gradient for a car. Taken her up once, and she said never again . Perhaps that's why the area further on was known as a lover's site . rolleyes
