Snake ... in too poor a state of repair to be fun, even without the speed restrictions.
Eh...??

When did you last drive over there? Nowt wrong with the surface, except for the bit that's slipped again, and that's only one foot long.

About a fortnight ago - to be honest it's the 'drop' bit I was thinking of - it really jars in my car. The rest of it isn't so bad now, you're right.

Ah, thought you might have been absent since the snow three years ago. It was more suited to tanks over the top for a while after that. Looks as though they can't afford to fix the slip, given the new 30 limit for ten whole yards...hehe

It's only a matter of time before they get a camera disguised as a road maintenance lorry set up for that section ...

It seems to have slipped much more often in the past decade or so. It really is time they built a motorway between two of the largest cities in the north - the dual route option where east and west carriageways use two different old railway tunnels would be brilliant - then the lorries, caravans and dawdlers could use the motorway, leaving Snake for people who want to drive.

That said, I tend to go Sheffield -> Manchester via Castelton / Winnats Pass at the moment, past where the A625 collapsed, as I think perhaps Snake will do one day unless the weight of traffic is taken off it.

I go via Winnats muchly often, Snake only late at night/up to dawn, purely because of the traffic. I reckon I'll be wearing Winnats out soon...hehe

I love Snake Pass. Beautiful and soooooo flowy. I mourn the lip that they redid. That was hilarious. The undulations are ONLY annoying at night when your light beam misses them or you dip into them with darkness suddenly beyond (at speed).

The standard of other motorists driving (as a whole) is also much higher than other comparable roads. If you are going for an overtake the other driver tends to lift to assist rather than drag race you.

The former A625 the other side of Winnats Pass is a nice bit of road as well, and usually deserted.

I have been there twice and never seen anything like this! Even mid-week before the tourist season gets into full swing its full of muppets doing 40mph and there is barely a chance to pass!

Your description sounds more like the north of Scotland wink

I do tend to drive at circa 8am or late so I imagine all the dithering 'tourists' arrive circa 10am and leave by 4..

I meant finding other drivers who lift off for you.

Surely there are better roads in the Peak District, why all the praise for the Snake?

Possibly. I just think its got everything that I like. Only A701 Peebles to Moffat beats it.

Snake used to be huge fun - it is reasonably wide, although it feels narrow in a modern car, it has climbs and drops and bends of all types, plus it is the most direct route from the second city to the fifth largest city, so it's actually useful.

Back in the day when I used to give it hammer in my Viva I mentally split it into sections (from Sheffield) - the straight-ish uphill bit, the lakes section, the forest section, the mountains (artistic licence) and the descent.

The sections seem much less well defined now - I don't know if that is because my car is faster, because I've driven it so many times, or because modern cars cut you off from the environment more.

I drive it in a '63 Riley 1.5. A slow car by today's standards though it can can be hustled along pretty well but even I get frustrated at being held up by slow traffic, having to watch for camera vans, the poor surface in parts (probably not an issue for more modern cars but on leaf springs and lever arm dampers...). The Snake can be enjoyable but often as not it isn't.

There's a nice little road that's normally quiet in that general area. Woodhead road, cuts from the woodhead pass though to greenfield road, take the left when heading north though digley reservoir. Only about 6 miles but has a nice windy section with sharp turns going up or down hill depending which way your heading.

Theres another road - not sure of the names, go past Ladybower Inn immediately on your left, climb climb then take the left. Its a wee bit bumpy at speed in the first part but enough to be challenging. In Winter a couple of years ago the steep climbs were completely iced over eek

Lots of good roads round there. Get an OS map.

My Folks live in Glossop so i do the snake every so often when traveling up from London. Did it the other week in the Esprit.. only met one car going my way.. luckily on the straight. It was a totally epic drive sun setting carbs burbling and the rasp of the engine note .....

So i turned around and did it again... well the bit before ladybower (manchester end)
