Makes me miss my old V2 Sti - N195 AAO! which went down south, the engine eventually went back up to Scotland somewhere in a rally car though smile

Nice one. thumbup

To get the best out of the B863 you need a light and agile car imo.
Given a free choice an Elise/Exige would be my pick.

But I wouldn't choose to go in the summer. Much better before or after the tourist season.
When all the grockles in their SUVs have either not arrived yet or have censored off back home.

That road is fine in the summer, it's everything else around there.

In summer getting on these roads early whilst the tourists are still at breakfast is the key.

Fair enough, but I'm not going to Scotland just to drive the B863: it's a 500 mile journey for me just to reach it. smile
I'll be doing at least 250 miles each day so there is no chance of doing that all before the tourists finish their breakfasts.
I'm sticking to out of season. With lower occupancy rates you can get better deals on accommodation as well.

The key to the B863 in summer is avoiding the times the tourists are out. So tourist breakfast time (before 9:30) or dinner time (7-8pm).

Brilliant in the mornings at this time of year as it's just light enough to see well when I'm driving to work in the mornings, and there is no foliage to obscure the sight-lines.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not specifically talking about the B863, just the highland roads in general. I also appreciate these roads aren't on everyone's doorstep. My comment was aimed at those who are travelling in the summer months. thumbup

I just want to get in my car and drive up there. No idea how you're able to wear a t-shirt in such low temperatures though!

There is another reason for going earlier or later in the year besides the people carriers. The Highland Midge.
Most active times are around sunup and sunset. I know you can apply repellant but I can do without the faff.

Problem is that Highland midge knows where it's going,( be it north or south) and which sort of folks to see as a good screw( much like a southern legal eagle), but finds that Highland folks are too thick skinned to bother with. rolleyes

I reckon it's on account of all that wheatgerm/bran/oats they eat. All of them high in Vitamin B1/Thiamine. The excess is excreted in sweat and breath: it's a natural repellent. Not forgetting the bog myrtle they wear on their ankles and wrists. smile

Think it's a familiarity thing. Coming from up there I've never been bothered with midgies but when I go anywhere else on the planet, the mossies devour me.

This - not bothered by the mozzies in Zim (where I'm from), but those Scottish Highland Midges are bloomin annoying, and each bite takes a month to clear.
