Sure you know - Not 100% accurate but Northern Constabulary tell you where the cameras will be: http://www.nscp.co.uk/news

Doesn't include the unmarked Volvo.

Had a look at the A82 references from Spean Bridge north. Bit vague to say the least. Had a look last time I was up north, about three years ago abd nothing was mentioned south of Fort Augustus, and locals confirmed this. Then one day one appeared in the middle of summer on one of the few decent places to pass coaches /caravans /wide vehicles etc. Top end of Loch Lochy just past Letterfinlay ,just before the road parts company with the Loch, there's two nice straits ,with a sweeping bend joining them .the road is almost twice the width of the normal over these two lengths ,with a laybye on the southern straight. I was heading south in a convoy with a few heavies ahead and had sped up on the first straight to let me ( if possible) get past as much as possible),if safe. Just round the corner , with hatches open was a Talivan .I saw brake lights a few cars ahead and held back . Safety - more like a nice place to cash in I'd say, or get bums on seats to make the SAC courses profitable. But then who am I to doubt their credentials.I only know this road from driving it for forty odd years, three of them on once a week trips from Fort William to Inverness to Tech college, and then from then on for about five years weekly or more up to Drumnadrochit. Plenty of places I know where more than a few folks had had fatals , but not where they choose to sit.

On the A 986 somewhere in the vicinity of Loch Clair with Beinn Eighe ahead and Liathach on the left.

Oh to be in Scotland now that winter is there with my ice axe and crampons ing up those hills!

Edit-----

Phoey! I'm not allowed to use an onomatopoeic word for the sound my points make when walking on hard ice, which is also used for a gap in the curtains.

Well if we are going to be completely accurate wink ... (and I'm sure you know this)

It was in Glen Torridon, in the area known as the Torridon hills which are all made up (largely) by Torridonian Sandstone - and the village known as Torridon doesn't actually exist. Its name is Fasaig. It's only recently that people (wrongly) refer to Fasaig as Torridon. OS maps just plonk the word Torridon at the end of the road as it describes the area. This is what started the confusion. People who live there use the correct address, which is Fasaig.

Also, I live in Shieldaig, which is in Torridon. Like someone living in Westminster is living in London... so with true pedant mode engaged, it was Torridon.

Having said all that - in 100 years the village of Fasiag will probably only be known as Torridon, as so many call it that these days. A sign was put up about 10 years ago pointing to 'Torridon'. That will almost certainly seal the deal.

So you were completely right when you said it was on the way to Torridon, but so was Lancs Dave, as it was in Torridon, which is an area, like the Cotswolds or the Chilterns.

[/major-pedant]

As you were.

Ahem - it's the A896. smile
</mode>

The A9 effectively forms the zone boundary for A & B classified roads in the Highlands: 8 series to the west and 9 series to the east.
There are only a small number of exceptions such as:

- The B9163 from the south end of the Cromarty Bridge west to Conon Bridge
- The section of the B9169 which runs south west from the A9 to Muir of Ord
- The A949 from the A9 west to Bonar Bridge.
- The B9176 over The Struie.

The first three are a consequence of diverting the A9 from its previous route north of Tain.
It now runs via the Cromarty Firth and Dornoch Firth bridges.
The B9176 is the oddball one being entirely out of sync.

There are also 8 series roads which do the opposite - for example:

- The A832 from the roundabout at Tore east to Cromarty
- The B817 from east of Alness to Kildary

Ah, pity. We will be the week before, so no chance of a random RV at the Loch Maree viewpoint or Kylesku bridge. smile

I'll also be up there in April, around the 14th and 15th. Can anyone recommend anywhere to stay in the Applecross area for a couple of nights. I'm thinking B&B rather than camping.

The Applecross Inn is great but will probably be full.

Here's my accommodation page... mostly Shieldaig but some on the coast road to Applecross

http://www.stevecarter.com/ansh/ansh7.htm

Spindrift is only 15 mins from Applecross

I stayed in a B&B up behind the Applecross Inn several years ago, accessed through the campsite - can't remember the name though.

It was fine IIRC, although you will need to a torch to find your way back up the steep wooded bank from the Inn in the dark after several beers. It took us some time ...........

I also recall coming out of my room in the early evening there to meet one of the other guests walking about on the landing, wearing nothing but a pair of black leather trousers and a Freddie Mercury moustache.
