I got this on my phone on Thursday after work at Farr wind farm above Inverness.

Still it's nothing on GetCarter's bow

Hi all,

Sorry if this has been done many times before. A few of us are planning on a Highlands roadtrip in July and just wanted to run our route by you, to make sure we are not missing anything good out.

Our itinerary is as follows;

Wed Afternoon / Evening = Drive from South Wales - Carlisle (stay night here)
Thursday = Carlisle - Glenelg (stay night here)
Friday = Glenelg - Inverness via Applecross etc. (stay night here)
Saturday = Inverness - Carlisle (stay night here again)
Sunday = Carlisle - South Wales

https://goo.gl/maps/felW9

As you can see we are restricted by time as only have these 4 days we are all off.

Any tips / feedback are welcome smile

Thanks

JM

Consider alternating your way south from Inverness to go down the A939/A93 to Perth, much better then the average speed cameras on the A9.

Also an option may be to go north on the East of Loch Lomond, via the Dukes Pass.

Edit to also change route through borders to include A807 St Mary's Loch road.

An alternative with both options added. https://goo.gl/maps/0vK0d

Seems like the weather up here has been pretty poor over the last 5 weeks ? Most locals complaining of rain, rain and more rain, along with cold winds ?
Yesterday however was the exception, it was just about perfect smile

Found this gem hidden away ......... smile

I wonder did I see the owner returning home in his DB9 at 10.45 this morning ?

Lovely part of the world, though this image reminds me more of Corsica that Western Scotland !

Stayed at the Loch Maree Hotel last night.

Loch Maree as smooth as a millpond at 6.30 this morning.

Getting to The Loch Maree Hotel meant a trip down THAT road, which wouldn't be complete without the obligatory image...

Some seriously crazy individuals on the Applecross loop today ...... smile

Nope, believe it or not, he drives a Berlingo when he's here.

Heads up to anyone planning on the B863 Kinlochring in the next couple of weeks - the "high road" (south side) has been surface dressed and has loose chippings galore. Should be fine by the end of the month once the chippings have bedded in.

I think you'll find it's "wanton vandalism", not "dressing". I drove less than a mile on it before doing a U turn and approached it from the other side. Great road driving (despite the wandering deer at dusk .....)

Add in wild goats to the deer. Often lurking on the corners opposite the campsite at Caolasnacon. Nearly clouted the black one tonight.

That quick: really? The Highways Department has been going banco on several of the best twisties down my neck of the woods lately. Two months on and they are all stone chip central, yet I very much doubt that the B863 carrries anything like the same volume of traffic. I'm staying away until I can be reasonably sure my paintwork won't suffer.

They've done the tar and chips on a lot of roads in Argyll - absolutely ruined decent sections of road with this nonsense; done properly it can create a good surface, much of the stuff that has been done is very poor indeed. Case in point being the section just north of Kilmartin heading over the Bealach at the Ford junction - has turned a worn, but smooth section of road, in to a bumpy mess frown It is vandalism as you say.

You should try Europe. On the whole much better roads there. Off to Spain tomorrow.

I think I'd be late for work if I had to go via Spain.
