Day 1. Keep it in check past Achanalt Station & watch out for the BiB between there and the roundabout at Achnasheen. Bonus points country... wink

Day 2. Alternative route from Ullapool to Lochinver - https://goo.gl/maps/q1ufwqogVL12 - slower but prettier.

Day 3. Alternative route from Inverness to Grantown-on-Spey - https://goo.gl/maps/Uk9N3rGYH1Q2 - avoids A9 traffic and average speed cameras.

I didn't realise how poor the A9 was at night north of around Pitlochry (I think).

Driving back from Fort William a few days ago in the dark, torrential rain and oncoming traffic with effectively non-existent cats eyes is not fun.

I love this tread!

I've "done" Scotland every year for the last 15 years or so.
I'm planning our 2016 one at the mo.
So I started reading this from the start, by the time I got to page 5 I'd reworked most of what I'd planned hehe

One from this year just keep the interest up! Anyone know the bridge/ wink

yes North side of the river - https://goo.gl/maps/kydxsCtpn742 - in the middle distance is the sign for the junction with the B976.
To Crathie via The Strone: at 1575ft (480m) it's the eighth highest paved public road in Scotland.

Guessing game entry #2. wink

Indeed.

Pan a bit to the left and you can see the toy cars. smile
The leading one is over a mile away.

The A939 is utterly superb with 3 summits in Scotland's top 20.
No.2  @ 2,113ft (644m)
No.6  @ 1,804ft (550m)
No.16 @ 1,437ft (438m)

Loving this thread. Have read it all and found some excellent advice. Planning my own road trip but not until April/May 2017. (Yes, I know, forward planning but this is the first opportunity Mrs B and I will have without the needs of others.)

Like Red Devil, I live in Kent. So there's the 800 mile return slog to and from Edinburgh before we approach the main purpose of this trip. Luckily we have good friends there who we will spend some catch-up time with them at each end of the trip. This is an added bonus.

To the 'Highlands Massive' of PH, (for whom I have to thank for some excellent route tips AND how to create and save them on Google Maps smile) I offer the following for consideration. It's a kind of North Coast 500 but takes in some stunning scenery and nice hotels without being a slave to the route. If anyone is bored enough to click on some or all of the links, I would really appreciate any feedback, comments or improvements, not only on my chosen route but on anything in general.

Day 1: Edinburgh – Oban: M9, A84, A85, A82, A85. https://goo.gl/maps/DH9xjVrjsrr 134 miles

Day 2: Oban – Uig (Skye): A828, A82, A87. https://goo.gl/maps/kGTkvxKGoEq 166 miles

Day 3: Uig – Torridon : A87, A890, A896, Bealach, etc. https://goo.gl/maps/CtRGGFw8L4L2 119 miles

Day 4: Torridon – Lochinver: A896, A832, A835, A837. https://goo.gl/maps/HCDXcr4M1rv 103 miles

Day 5: Lochinver – John O’Groats: A837, A894, A838, A836. https://goo.gl/maps/xpuDVSj8J6F2 143 miles

Day 6: John O’Groats – Nairn: A99, A9, A96. https://goo.gl/maps/2Uv9U8p35PE2 133 miles

Day 7: Nairn – Glencoe: A96, A82, https://goo.gl/maps/F5pQbz8RZ3u 98 miles

Day 8: Glencoe – Edinburgh: A82, A85, A84,M9. https://goo.gl/maps/UzSSZwFF1oF2 130 miles

Peter

PS. Oh yeah, this will all be done in our TVR Chimaera so obviously no speed or noise involved! laugh The camera comes too (though hoping to avoid those by the roadside) so I will try to emulate Mr Carter's fantastic work - although I suspect, rather poorly! This is a bucket-list trip for me in such a car, so already quietly excited...
HAPY NEW YEAR to all. beer

You are missing two tricks on day 4.

When you get to Kinlochewe, turn left and go via Gairloch. Prettier.

and after Ullapool do this.

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/Lochbroom+Fillin...

Torridon to Lochinver with your existing route is only a 2 and a bit hour trip anyway, so you need to flesh it out.

ETA, and on day 3 your drive is only 2.5 hours. Take a detour to Elgol on the south of Skye. It'll only add an hour and is well worth the trip.

Thanks Steve, much appreciated. I know the drive times are a little 'relaxed' and I may have to consolidate as the overall duration is around 2 weeks with the Edinburgh stop-overs. I also want to enjoy the scenery and soak it all up with food and wine along the way. Any galleries for Mrs B to visit?

That said, I'm going to amend the route with your suggestions. Well done sir!

There's a small gallery at the balnakeil craft village near Durness.

http://www.nicolapoole.co.uk/gallery.html

And this place - although not sure if it's a walk in gallery near loch eriboll ( east of Durness ).

Lotte Glob - a personal heroine. I own a lot of her work and adore it -it isn't for everybody but I think it is sensational . I love the fact that some of her work is also performance - she collects stones from the hill, then fires them into some weird, vaguely organic shapes and then she walks back up into the mountains and finds a remote loch where she leaves the works on the shore . Somebody may see them next week - or nobody will see them for a century. Her home/gallery can be toured on prior engagement and well worth it. She herself is remarkable- a Danish Patti Smith lookalike .

That's a great video Dave! Definitely one of the better ones. Beautiful car too. I'd like one of those one day when we no longer need the capacity of the Disco. Looking forward to seeing day 2 of this very professional production. I feel you may do this kind of thing to earn a daily crust, it's that good. thumbup

ETA. Stunning scenery - or did you mention that?!? smile
