Is the Applecross pass open at the moment? Would going down it tomorrow mod morning be foolish? Hire car so no winters on.
It's open, Snow showers forecast. High risk of snow sign up at Tornapress.... but raining as I type (05:35).

He'll be on it at the moment. It's due to be +5C here today, so will probably stay above freezing up top. Just.

Update. I just grabbed the gritter van on it's way past. He's just done the Bealach, says it's snow and fairly icy up there at the moment, but should be okay by about 10 - 10:30.

I've booked the various hotels for a trip in June. Following the N500 as much as possible and then down the Old Military Road on the last day.

Any suggestions to make the trip even better would be welcome!

PS. there are 10 of us going!

Day 1: https://goo.gl/maps/DRxMAhbCkwA2

Day 2: https://goo.gl/maps/tXyLiFj6saD2

Day 3: https://goo.gl/maps/F86yXe13sMk
You guys kindly suggested some tweaking of my original route a while back. I also wanted to ask those that have driven the area, will there be places to stop in order to eat and refuel along the way?

yes

Eat.

Day 1 - https://goo.gl/maps/3wv8XzAuCo22 - be aware though that it will be crowded and parking a case of find a space if you can. smile
Day 2 - https://goo.gl/maps/SyHEAejing32
Day 3 - See below

Unfortunately our usual stop, the Station Restaurant in Ballater, was destroyed in a fire last year - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-o...
So I have no alternative to offer there. A friend mentioned this place in Grantown-on-Spey - https://goo.gl/maps/qnGiSf67MoP2 - but I haven't tried it myself.

Also, on Day 3 you might want to consider avoiding the (boring!) A9 and its average speed cameras by using more of the A939 (via Dava).
See the link I posted on the previous page.

Fuel. Discussed on pages 117/118.

Day 1 - Lochcarron, Applecross
Day 2 - Ullapool, Scourie, Thurso
Day 3 - Tain, Inverness, Grantown-on-Spey

As above, when you get to Inverness ignore the A9 and take the A96 to Nairn, then turn south onto the A939 - much much better road.

Braeval Hotel in Nairn good for food and lots of craft beers, less so for parking (not much of it, but plenty safe)
Garth Hotel in Grantown good for food and parking

Or if you want to go more native there is a nice bakery in Grantown that does good haggis or macaroni pies.

Better still take to the B roads via the '4Cs'* unless you have a specific reason for visiting Nairn (see my link in a previous post).
Much more fun and far less traffic than the A96 which is the main road from Inverness to Aberdeen.

 * Culloden Moor (past the 1746 battlefield site - https://goo.gl/maps/u6iun65CcDq), Croy, Clephanton, and Cawdor.

Sorry to disappoint but no, we didn't take the loop in the end and I've been in a black Europcar Meriva all week! Stunning pic as usual though!
