To be fair, when you consult the complementary map the Applecross road IS there. Well, some of it. The authors do not encourage to drive it, though.

If you can dig out the film 'LAXDALE HALL' from the 50's - you can see the state of the road to Applecross. (It was mostly filmed there)

And if you were to take a trip to Mallaig ( in the age of this map),you may need to buy some nappies for a trip on the Glenfinnan - Lochailort section at that time. Earliest I can remember was in the late 50's when the highest points on this section were slightly more than a car wide and unsurfaced of broken stone ,with an unfenced drop to the valley below.

We will be at Applecross campsite for a couple of nights this weekend and might make a bit of noise passing your way at least once. We'll have Capri, MG Midget or 2, TR7 V8 and hopefully an Alfa GTV (rear drive 80s one) but that one is looking shaky.

Just heard we are arriving when he Applecross raft race is kicking off - should be a laugh.
We passed each other at 10:05 between Shieldaig and Torridon. I gave you a wave! (Was in white RR).

Cool - I think you were about the only car we had passed by then.

We had to rebuild the back brakes on one of the midgets at the campsite later that day - not the place to test new brakes.

Weather was brilliant on Saturday. We went over the Bealach with near zero visibility on the way home on Sunday. As usual a great weekend - although the midges were awful when we were fixing the car after dinner - I have suffered a bit today oops.

We saw you (well, your cars anyway) in Ullapool on Saturday. Mrs L and I stopped off for some lunch on our way back home from Kinlochbervie & the Capri & TR7 were parked in front of Mrs L's Mini. No pictures I'm afraid, but I'm happy to offer an hours free parking lessons to the TR driver. wink

Going to be doing this route from Glasgow this Friday, finishing up in Skye next Friday via campervan.

Looking to stop somewhere between Inverness and John 'O' groats, any recommendations?

Probably a bit close to Inverness however Dornoch is a nice wee spot. Campsite right on the coast and within walking distance of the "town."

Part 2 - I'd turn right off the a835 onto the a832 and follow the coastal road all the way down to Applecross. Cracking road and very scenic.

Have a great trip.

Phunk: I'd Def turn right at Achnasheen and go via Kinlochewe, Glen Torridon, Shieldaig, Fernamore, Applecross - some of the best scenery in the Highlands, and you'll be doing the Bealach the next day anyway.

I'm in Stirling for work in September and hiring a car to visit a friend up in Lossiemouth for the weekend.

Any recommendations for good roads between Stirling and Lossiemouth? Google plots me along the A9 > A95 > A96 or alternatively A90 > A96

Is the above decent or is there a more scenic route which wouldn't take too much longer? And would it be worth spending more ££ and hiring something slightly more interesting (thinking Abarth 595) or is the route not worth it?

Thanks

Oh, this is an easy one. Yes, hire a fun car!

Stirling > blairgowrie > glenshee > braemar > turn left to tommintoul at crathie or bridge of gairn > tommintoul > grantown on spey > back to tommintoul (yes, do this!), > dufftown > then you're a straight line to lossie

Same / similar on way home....

Thanks to everyone who put suggestions of roads on here, I tried a few last week. I think my favourite was coming from Achnahaird past the lochs towards Ullapool - that'd be a brilliant rally stage. I also liked the road that linked up with that one, from Lochinver... didn't really enjoy the first section so much but the second half was fantastic. Good sheep photo opportunities too!

I did some drone filming while there if anyone wants to see: https://vimeo.com/180227550
