The cafe at the base of the Applecross pass was closed (GetCarter made us aware of this) - on a saturday? Why? I thus was not able to meet and greet GetCarters dog. Sorry for that.
They are away on Holiday for two weeks (they don't get one in the summer). You wouldn't have seen Charlie dog there anyway, I actually live about 150 yards from where you took this on the Applecross coast road:

@JM. Re the second pic: one of the 'n's has gone AWOL. wink

I have posted this vid before. It's only 40 years ago rather than 90, but see how many of the locations you can specifically pinpoint. smile - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQZownCGnYg
I guessed it.would be that video. By coincidence the chap singing (Bill Paterson) is my dad's namesake. The road down to Loch Maree at the end is a huge contrast to today smile
That ad brings back memories. Was a regular on Grampian TV in the 70s / 80s. Pity most tourists ignored the advice.... :-)

Sure is. Inevitable though given that the rest of the A832 is S2 and it's the direct route to/from Gairloch. The alternatives involve a massive detour.
A shame it couldn't be left as it was because the new road spoils the landscape imo. Single track roads with good sight lines are much more interesting to drive as well.

Yesterdays post did not get through, so today more from yesterday first.

A sunday it was yesterday, and again a very sunny early october day. The leg was from Torridon to Oban, which took me nine hours. This was not for the traffic, but for the scenery.

Speaking of traffic, the A87 could well be recommended. Very good scenery, very little traffic (at least on a sunday afternooon) and well behaved. The A82 south of Invergarry was much less enjoyable, south of Fort William it turned out to be dreadful. There is always someone with enormous ears incompetently driving a white (why always white???) campervan at 38 mph in a NSL section.

The A828 was not much better, and the A85 going east was a catastrophe. Luckily, you can beat the traffic going into Oban by taking the Glencruitten road that branches off the A85 in Achnacloich. A marvellous road and you suddenly are in the north-west of the Highlands again. It has everything (sheep, kettle, mountains and glens) albeit with a greener tone.

I still miss my camera dearly, the mobile phone bearly copes. So please be prepared.

The morning view from the Torridon Hotel.

Shieldaig. It is just pretty.

Lochcarron.

Skye.

Glenelg. The ferry was still operating in mid October. The Inn was very well operating.

The Glenelg ferry.

Finally, the highland tiger (or is it?).

Your guesses on the last few pictures.

The Scotsburgring was fun, the northern road much more compared to the southern road (which has a bus service that drives in the middle of the road...!!!). The northern road is through woodland, the southern road up and down the hills and much bleaker. Good clockwise as well as anticlockwise, simply according to the sun.

Oban is not much to speak of. There are very many people compared to the Highlands...

Have seen that car many times. Often with its Healey stablemate behind it.

The final day of the Highlands quest. From Oban to Oban. A lot of driving, thus not many pictures.

The pictures ARE in the right order today, so guess my route and let me know whether the pileup on the A82 north of Balloch was not as bad as it seemed (ambulance-blaring-wise). They had the A82 closed, which made driving the A814 interesting... The A814 would normally be a great little road to drive, but not with HGVs and coaches coming at you from everywhere.

I'm pretty sure I saw you take this photo. It was 9 a.m. you were standing by the loch with your phone taking a photo, next to a small black car (poss vauxhall) - wearing a light brown jumper?

If that was you, I passed you in the white RR Evoque. (On my way to Lochinver)

ETA shameless insert of drone photo taken in Lochinver:

Awww, come on guys! Did I or did I not emphasize that I am alone in the Highlands with a mobile phone, bad WiFi and autocorrection? I will kettle the cattle for you, that is for sure. Hopefully you still enjoyed the picture service. I am now back on the continent and already missing Scotland...
