Many thanks chaps, looks awesome but it's just not quite on the route I've been planning for later in the year with a group I'm in.
I've heard stories over police presence with traffic cars and camera vans catching out the unfortunate. Just how active are they? A87 has about 12 or more locations listed as possible camera van positions. How cautious should someone be around the Ft WM - Skye areas?
In our experience, we didn't see a camera or a police car/van the entire time we were in Scotland, and we were there in the height of summer. Maybe we were lucky, but we were also sensible at points.I've heard stories over police presence with traffic cars and camera vans catching out the unfortunate. Just how active are they? To the road above - good looking road. Recommended by Steve, and was good for a top speed run. I'd not recommend it for something like I was in - an MR2 Roadster. I topped out easily down there.

Would that be the NC500 route?Bolting a few days either side with information gleaned from these pages. Very helpful indeed!

Not the entire route sir, Ft WM, Kyle, Applecross, Torridon, Gairloch, Ullapool, Kylesku and back towards Inverness over two days. A832 at the point in the photo is just off our route unless we do it both ways for a few miles.

That's exactly what we did. We turned around at this roundabout:Bolting a few days either side with information gleaned from these pages. Very helpful indeed!

When you get to Kinlochewe, just turn right instead of left and drive for 2 minutes to take you to the top of Glen Docherty - then turn round. It's worth it. Bolting a few days either side with information gleaned from these pages. Very helpful indeed!

Whats the weather like mid to end March ?thinking of having a few days up there from about the 20th
Was looking at basing ourselves in Fort William.
thanks
Personally I'd say you are better off going in March/April/May and September/October, so your trip sounds spot on. The reason I say this is that the weather is unpredictable up there, and at least then you have a good chance of avoiding midges as it's a bit colder. Was looking at basing ourselves in Fort William.
thanks
We went in July, and were very lucky with the lack of midges, and the weather; though even in July we went from torrential downpours to bright sunshine and back again very quickly on the trip. A decent amount of wind keeps the midges away.
I'm going back again this year (less driving, more exploring) and I'm going in April for that reason.

The 2015 pics I posted on page 160 were taken in mid April during our annual group driving trip. Those in 2016 were from my solo exploration in mid September.
April is generally warmer than March, no midges, and it's before all the tourists arrive and get in your way on the single track roads.
September is warmer than October, the midges have mostly subsided, and only a smattering of rented campervans have yet to br off whence they came.
Less than 3 months to go now before the next fix.
As for traffic cars and scamera vans, my visits to the Highlands total over 15k miles and I have never seen one of the latter up there. Nor any of the former on the A87. The only times I have seen any Trafpol have been on the A832 between Achanalt Station and the roundabout at Achnasheen (one of their known haunts) and on the A890 just after it. Just 3 occasions in 8 years. Regarding the A832 up to the Glen Docherty viewpoint, I know someone who was pinged on that bit. The car was hidden here - https://goo.gl/maps/gzJoVKGi4GM2 - the officer zapped him as he hoofing it away from Kinlochewe. By the time he cottoned on it was far too late to do anything about it. That was back in 2009. He got banned for his exuberance (can't remember whether it was 28 or 56 days)...
