Drove past the Five Sisters yesterday. Still a fav - for both the drive and scenery.

What actual road is this please? Only I'm thinking of a Highlands trip myself sometime in the very near future and would love to take this in if possible.
It's the A87. If you drive north from Glasgow, Crianlarich, Fort William, Spean Bridge, Invergarry ... it's the bit that heads towards Skye... turn right past the castle and you join the NC500 at Lochcarron.

PM me if you want more detail.

ETA : google 'five sisters kintail' for maps.

Go to the website, www.wetroads.co.uk select the Scottish Borders region (so not actually applicable to this thread about the Highlands whistle ) and scroll down to Tow Ford and a picture of the ford. The grid reference hyperlinks to a Streetview map of the area.

( Or copy and paste this, http://wetroads.co.uk/scottishborders.htm then scroll down etc)

Cheers for that! - driven that very road a number of times, but have just realized I always drive it from West to East.
Road trip planning mode activated!

In the spirit of the thread I bumped into these guys at the top of the Baelach a while ago!

We were up there a couple of weekends ago, castle looks great lit up at night.
Stayed in a nice cottage in Plockton for the weekend.

Went across to Skye for an it then had a drive round to Loch Carron. Thought about going up to applecross but the weather didnt look great.

A82 and A78 great roads.

So decided to plan a road trip, got three days leave Monday 20th return 23rd. I live just off J40 of the M6 so hoping three days driving should be enough to have a good drive. Would like to take in a little bit of walking and love food, leaving wife and kids at home!

Looking for some routes, accommodation and places to eat. Will start reading the thread but feel free to make suggestions.

Having only driven up to Loch Lomund before the first choice is what car to take, low slung sports car or hot hatch, I'm leaning to the latter, as I've read the roads are not exactly smooth!

Any tips much appreciated. TIA

Fine Dining at the Torridon Hotel, Kinloch Lodge (Skye) and Three Chimneys (Skye). Inverlodge (Lochinver). Great pub grub in Kylesku Hotel. Good Seafood in the Applecross Inn.
Either car will be fine. We have lots of Caterfields, Fezzas, Lambos doing the west coast. Just watch the hairpins on the Bealach.

Hello all,
I have a week off work next week and thinking of starting in Warwickshire on Sunday and back for Friday evening. Fancy taking in old military road then over to applecross and Skye. Is it worth it at this time of year or will some of the roads be closed? Never been to Scotland before and wanted to do this for some time and need a week away.
Thanks for any advice.

Unless we get a sudden snow storm, all the roads will be open. They are certainly all open at the moment. Most of the hotels/Inns are now open, as are all the B&Bs (Though I think the Applecross Inn may be full.)

I used to drive from near Shipston on Stour in Warks to Shieldaig (by Applecross) in one go and it took about 11 hours (with a decent stop half way) - just to give you an idea.

If you get the weather, it's a good time to come as the roads are still empty. It's ALL about the weather!

ETA... today:

PS ... this is a reasonably good 8 day forecast >>> http://xcweather.co.uk/forecast/shieldaig
