Thank you for the reply. Great news and will just get on and do it. Picture looks glorious. Will not book into hotels and just hope to find one each day. That was a good run in one go from shipston up to applecross!

March and April are the best time of the year to do Scotland. You get above-average sunny days, snow sprinkled on the mountaintops, lighter traffic (outside Bank Hols), no midges, most places are open / reopening, and people are happier because Spring has arrived.

What's the sports car? Personally I would say you'd enjoy it in a sports car more.

I took my MR2 last time, and my mate took his Golf GTE. I'm taking my Audi S1 this time, and am not looking forward to it as much from a driving perspective.

Will post up the route tomorrow for critique.

Elise has been sold, so either Megan'RS or the Elise replacement which is super! More concerned over the condition of the roads, looking at the pictures my old Elise wouldn't have been ideal due to it being low and firmly sprung, the new car is low, more road compliant but a chunk wider.

Wider would be my concern, not the quality of the roads. The roads are fantastic in places, and absolutely shocking in others, but I still wouldn't have wanted to do it in a hot hatch (if I had a sports car to use).

Was your Elise particularly low and firm?

Never had any problems with mine on any roads, even ones that weren't open...

Yes race dampers, uprated bushes and R888R's.

Thanks, just concerned as I'm not used to driving such a car and with it being wider, much more powerful and taking into account possible bad weather I'm thinking stay safe. I don't live that far away so if it works out well will take my wife next time and palm the kids off to Grandma!

What do you think? Sorry rubbish with tech!

Day 1
Edinburgh to Skye (Stay in Skye)
M90 - A9 - A889 - A86 - A82 - A87 doesn't look exciting on the map, suggestions appreciated.

Leaving Edinburgh about 11am

Day 2 (Not booked accommodation yet)
Uig - Kylesku
Via Applecross loop, A832, A385, A837, B689, A894

Day 3
Early start Kylesku via Tongue/Lairg - Edinburgh
A894 - A838 - A836 then cruise back

Will be using a map book, useless with sat navs.

Day 2 isn't very far, day 3 is either friggin' miles or you're missing out on lots of good stuff...

Shortest option on day 2 is about 168 miles, with plenty opportunities to extend it a fair bit further on smaller roads.

Day 1:

The A889/A86 is a good section, but the previous M90~A9 is not very interesting.

One option would be to head west towards Stirling in the M9 then continue West on the A's 84, 85 & 82 to Fort William, with the added option of the 'Lochleven Loop' B863. That's the road through Rannoch Moor and Glencoe.

Another option along the lines of your original route would be to avoid much of the M90 and A9 by going over the hills on the smaller less travelled roads. So from the Forth Road Bridge look for the A823 and follow it to Crieff. Then the A822 after a brief section Eastwards on the A85 and head to Amulree. You have an option then of taking the small unclassified road single track over the hills (up the hairpins) and down into Kenmore, or A822/A826 to Aberfeldy.

Then B846 and other minor roads with options of detours to Kinloch Rannoch~Loop round Loch Rannoch etc/some minor roads especially the one from Trinafour to the A9 dual carriageway that goes up to Drumochter summit. Then it's just a few miles of A9 trunk road (with ave speed cameras on the single carriageway sections) to the A889 turn off.

Day 3:

Consider after Inverness trying to head across east to pick up the A939, then A93 to Perth. e.g. https://goo.gl/maps/GPkT3Pw1Za52

Wanted to be flexible on Day 2, my other past time is walking so if the weather is good wouldn't mind a two to three hour hike. If it isn't may plough on further north.

Thanks JM for the tips will look at you comments and look to adjust my route.

Not sure what is wrong with my wife but she said she is gutted not to join me and we should plan a driving break to Italy agian next year 😂, kids in tow. I love my wife she is the best!

Matt, you previously expressed concerns about some of the roads.
So some pictures may help ease the worst of your fears. wink

Amulree to Kenmore hairpins.

Trinafour to A9.

Achiltibuie to Lochinver.

All unclassified roads.

The A roads might not be as good, or quiet. whistle

I would go via Crieff (see below) rather than the A84, then A85 to Crianlarich and A82 to FW. It would be sacrilege to miss out the 'Scotsburgring' smile

That would be be my pick. Video thereof - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zY2srTHmJE

The extra mileage to Rannoch Station is worth it imo. Visited it on my trip last September.
Amazingly remote and surrounded by mountains in all directions.

If you're feeling peckish I can vouch for this establishment on the station platform. smile - http://www.rannochstationtearoom.co.uk/

Definitely.thumbup

However head for Grantown-on-Spey via Culloden Moor (past the battlefield site) and Cawdor.
It avoids the average speed scameras on the A9, plus the A939 is worth far more 'PH points'.

I've found the Trinafour hairpin on a map, but can't for the life of me find the ones between Amulree and Kenmore!
