Hah, yes I nearly halved the google maps ETA for a drive from Achmelvich to Gairloch at the right time of day. Think they must base it on a dodgy old Dutch camper van pace smile

Back up next week, couple days on Skye, then up to Gairloch and Lochinver, then across to Braemar.

Any suggestions for

a) Nice cut across from the A1 to Glasgow, balancing time/scenery/fun roads as it'll be at the tail end of an all day drive from Kent.

b) Creative route from Lochinver to Braemar.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Red Devil - I like the look of that route, I have done a mixture before, sometimes cut across the A66, sometimes done the A696/A68 way but not done that route across the Pennines. We shouldn't be in a huge hurry so might give that a try!

Regarding the Lochinver to Inverness, I've done both at some stage but can't remember the differences - which one is prettier / better drive etc. I will have come up from Ullapool to get to Lochinver so might take the A836 across to the A9. Want to stop off at the Moray to try and see the Dolphins anyway.

I think I'll use the route Red Devil gave me one year for Inverness to Braemar, the one that cuts down through Cawdor on the B9090 and joins the A939 that way. That is an epic drive, will not forget trying to keep pace with a spiritedly driven Focus ST170 down there in my Mx5 one year. Great fun!

Roll on Wednesday driving
That's really intense! Are you sure that'll still be enjoyable, they are very tiring roads anyway. I've done similar to you before and got really burned out.

Top tip - start early! I did a 5am mad dash from Glasgow to Elgol in Skye. One of the best drives ever, shaved nearly an hour off the google maps estimate and averaged just under the NSL. Just be on max deer alert!!

As for Fort William. Best left alone - unless you want climbing gear. Some good shops for that.
Really? Not recommended as a starting point for a Southerner to get acclimatised then?

Anyone know if Europcar Inverness stick winter tyres on their cars in the winter months? Got a Fiat 500 or similar for 5 days mid-Feb next year and just curious, as I'll be going out to Gairloch for the week so fairly remote.

I'd be stunned if any car hire outfits in the UK fitted winter tyres. I can't see it being economical for them.
Yes, I suppose I'm used to places in Europe doing it but it's a legal requirement in many countries. If I was renting cars I'd stick all seasons on at least, surely the savings from reducing people sticking them into ditches or needing recovery would balance any cost. Well, hope it's not a harsh February then!

Is the Applecross pass open at the moment? Would going down it tomorrow mod morning be foolish? Hire car so no winters on.
