Did you hear what happened to the driver in Torridon? I assume he was ok (?), as the bloke that found him was laughing as he told me about it!

Trying to clear a passing place and wheels went into the peat bog I believe.
I haven’t heard of anyone getting hurt thank goodness, fortunately most of the unintentional off road shenanigans happen at very low speeds.

Not the highlands but many years ago I drove over the Pennies for work everyday. I had a Sierra 4x4. One day around 7am I came across a breached snow plough blocking the road. I gave the driver a lift to the nearest phone box. I was really pissed off as I had then had to find a route around the road he had blocked laugh
Many years ago up in Shetland I managed to overtake a snow plough which was struggling to clear a small drift. He was in a regular RWD council truck fitted with a plough and gritter body, I was in a L Series Subaru with skinny winters all round. I just bunged it into low range 4WD and clambered past!

We asked these people to wait for us to open the road but they couldn’t wait. Yes they blocked the road less than a mile farther on.

It’s so easily done, I was the only person to stay on the road up here through sheer luck. I have been in that situation before though.
You probably work with my brother if you're on the road crew on the north coast :-)

This was my handiwork on the A897 earlier in the day.
That's a lovely, clean job - could do with you in Aberdeen/Shire.....

That road was closed half an hour later due to drifting. biglaugh

Thought I'd post in here rather than starting a new thread elsewhere.

I'm heading to Orkney for the first time in the summer, on the Scrabster to Stromness ferry. Looking at the booking options, is the Magnus lounge worth it? £7.50 doesn't seem like a rip-off (compared to an airport lounge), but if it's not worth it I'll save my pennies.

Not bothered about alcohol etc, more just if it was worth it for a quiet place to sit

Looks a bit straight for drifting but I guess good conditions for it otherwise.

They've resurfaced much of Glen Torridon (at last), so you can get here without breaking an alloy.

I’ve just had a wonderful day in the hills up northwest. Canisp and Ben Stack. Roads near empty and fine until heading back to Ullapool in the dark (deer).
Obligatory pic of that bridge

And a couple of pics from the hill tops:
Suilven from Canisp

And from the top of Ben Stack at sunset looking east (I think Ben Loyal in the distance)

I did the west coast and Skye over the summer but I'd absolutely go up during winter.

Do things get pretty rough up there with snow in general?

Awesome.
Do you think the road crew would fancy a spell in Fife next?

No. Stick to the coast and it's only a few days in an average winter that you'll get held up. It's much warmer here than it is in middle England due to the proximity to the sea.

In the middle, you can get seriously stuck... just make sure you're behind rather than in front of the gritter!

Anyone got accommodation recommendations for Skye (pets not allowed)? My wee one is getting very into dinosaurs and I'm looking to take her to Staffin. The wife is talking about renting a campervan to do it but as I have an Impreza and starting from Glasgow that is a much more appealing prospect for me.
