Couple from the Tesco run at the weekend:

(everyone take a pic looking down Glen Docherty, so I thought I'd take one looking up)

I'm debating between two possible routes which I have attached below.

Are there any views on which the "better" route is? Pros and cons of both would be great! Essentially, the difference between the two is the route between the Dornie Hotel and Ulapool, with one hugging the coast all the way.

Thanks!

The second pic, the little C shape that goes out to the west and then comes back and bends back to ullapool .... thats the best drive in the British Isles IMO

Hi jackal, because of the scenery or because you can "press on"? That's the applecross peninsula you're referring to right?

Jumping in. No it's not, it's the coast road from Kinlochewe to Ullapool (If I understand his 'c' shape.). It's very fast in some places, and very pretty in others.

The 'quicker' route to Ullapool is more direct and shaves 2 hrs off the time, but is less pretty, and sometimes (VERY occasionally) has speed cameras. Not so with the coastal route. So far.

The plotted route is via Achnasheen. As said, very fast, but my preference would be to turn left after crossing the railway at Strathcarron station. Far more scenic going via the A896 to Lochcarron, Shieldaig, and Torridon. Plus the quick detour from Kinlochewe up to the viewpoint.

I would make sure I went to Tesco everyday, twice a day. Great shots.

Been some cracking sunsets here recently:

Oh and by the way... for the Bealach nuts, the new cafe opens at Tornapress (at the very start of the road) next Easter. Good place to meet up!

It's mostly right place right time. Living here helps big time. Sony RX100 most of the time - always in pocket. Posh Nikon D800 if I'm feeling keen.

I can see that! Breathtaking. I live amongst some impressive scenery myself and should take advantage of it more. Thanks for the info smile

i'm not saying this is what you meant, but it always makes me laugh (kind of) when people make the assumption that good pictures are just down to how good a camera you used.

No it wasn't. I live in N Yorkshire so scenery is in abundance. But I've yet to find A. A camera I'm happy with the quality of and B. A recommendation of a camera that I can actually see the results of. Generally the recommendations come from some randoms' opinion! Nice to see what a camera can do.

Fair enough you have a genuine reason then smile I get asked on occasion and depending on what they are getting at it can grind my gears a bit!

I bunged the GoPro on the car on the the way back from Tesco this morning. Specifically, top to bottom of Glen Docherty. It was empty going, but coming back there was some traffic. As filming, I stayed on the left of the white line. (There's a first for everything)

Stunning photo. Right place right time. I was quite surprised on the Applecross loop
last Monday at just how few folk acknowledged me when passing. There was a time that every car you stopped for would give a friendly wave.

Summer rules. In winter it's just locals, so you always get a wave. This time of year however....

In summer the locals are too busy cursing GetCarter for having brought the PH massive and traffic chaos to the Applecross loop grumpy

FYI people, Applecross coast road currently closed and blocked due to broken down lorry. In my experience this will take 5 - 6 hours to clear.
