The map is a bit of a sod to see, is that at the beginning of the Pass just by the T-junction?

No chance of adding a google maps link too?

It is... and I tried google maps but ended up in the pub it was so tricky (I'm not a web designer - they have no money left for a pro).

I'll make the map clearer.

[quote=Who me ?]Sja- I suspect the end of this road is close to a track leading to the forestry road leading down to close to Onich. I once had a ate who had a croft high up from Onich, and I'd suspect that it's only a short hop over the hills to the end of the Lundrava road.

Yep, you're spot on. The croft/farm was for sale last year but don't know who currently owns it. Nigel_onich probably does though! It's just over half a mile on boggy moorland following a rough path till the top of the forestry road.

@ 00:13 - http://goo.gl/ZBU7ox - we were there the day before. smile

Apart from one heavy shower approaching Loch Glascarnoch on the way up to Ullapool we had 5 days of fabulous uninterrupted sunshine for our annual bash. A great clear run up the Bealach too.

On Saturday we were heading from Strathcarron to Achnasheen on our way back from Skye and passed these guys:
http://gtscotland.com/the-leaving-of-extraordinary... going the other way near the hostel at Achnashellach.

Will post a few pics once I have finished transferring the several hundred currently stored on the card!

It might be the screen I'm viewing it on, but it wasn't that clear & doesn't zoom.
Thanks for confirming I read it right then, maybe it's not as bad as I thought laugh

From memory, the track on the Onich side went from the old Forestry houses ,near Inchree( if still there) up a rocky forestry road to the croft. I've only been up there once ,at night. But that was that long ago ,that the Belford was closer to Glen Nevis place road end.

yes Have a look at the pictures in the Cafe section.
In the background of the top one you can see the bridge before the left hander.
In the one below it, the road sign and the two braced fence posts.

Unfortunately we were there a week too soon to check it out. frown
A few pics of that day.

We had one very heavy shower near Loch Glascarnoch on the way to our 'base camp' in Ullapool.
After that we had wall to wall sunshine for all of our sorties over the next 5 days. smile

This thread has inspired me to get myself up to the highlands. It’s going to be a flying visit, leaving Glasgow midday Friday and back by midday Sunday.

Given all the great information in this thread I’m going to head out towards applecross and the western end of Scotland to try and get a clear road or two.

Can anybody recommend anywhere good to stay? It will only be me and I’ll probably be out early to catch the clear roads so nothing to OTT but a recommendation is always good.

For the first night I’m thinking somewhere close to Kyle of Lochalsh as that is about 4 hours out of Glasgow according to Google.

Any true highlights I must see while I’m there?

places to stay here (near Applecross/Torridon):

ETA Kyle is a bit rubbish. Glenelg or Plockton are MUCH nicer.

I've stayed at the Kyle hotel and it was ok, nothing fancy just a reasonable rate for a clean comfortable room.
Had a meal in the bar at night which was decent enough pub grub and the bar was busy with locals.
Also stayed at the Balmacara hotel room was of a similar standard, dining was more formal and good but the bar was more just the lounge/reception area of the hotel and just guests were in.

Plockton is worth a visit and does good food in the bar as well as a restaurant. Not stayed so can't comment on the rooms.

Glenelg is a dead-end unless you get the wee ferry to Skye, but you do get to go over 'the Ratagan'.

If I was you going from Glasgow on Friday evening I'd consider just stopping at Fort William and get an early start ad head for Ullapool up the coast via Applecross. Then assess whether you want to go on further north or stay in Ullapool depending on time, weather and how you feel.

I just arrived back from Scotland today in the family car and all I can say is thank god I did not take mine. The journey up was appalling, crowded roads, potholes, the usual.

As for hotels, well I decided not to go up to the Highlands as I'd been twice before and only found two that were good, the Balmacara, as mentioned and the Strathcarron hotel. The rest ranged from dangerous to mediocre, including being dirty and over-priced.

As for my recent experience, I stayed in Edinburgh as I was visiting a friend. I had originally intended to bring my car so a hotel with secure parking was a must. In the end, I was obliged to book two nights as part of their terms. I had to pay the first night in advance on a debit card. When we arrived, their was no one to greet us but text instructions had been sent. We didn't see the owner until the following morning. The parking was not that secure. The room was small, the bathroom was miniscule with a tiny sink which over flowed when face washing, the taps didn't work properly and there were two things broken in the shower plus the window took two of us to lift open. The cost for the pleasure of all this was £60 per night NOT including breakfast. Typical? I don't know. But I have never had such consistently bad experiences on the Continent. If you pay 35 Euros a night, you know what you're going to get and that the breakfast costs a further 8 Euros or so.

I understand that quite good deals are to be had on Scotrail. Definitely something to consider if there is a next time.

£60 is very cheap for Edinburgh. There's a shortage of hotel accommodation in the city.

What was this hotel called?

Maybe, but you can do a lot better on the Continent for the same money. That's why I'm doing 4 trips there this summer.

Not only that, overall, it's cheaper for me to go there via. Eurotunnel for a 7-10 day trip than it is to go to Scotland and the roads are a million times better, imho.

We pretty much had the same conversation on page 80 of this thread. £60/night is bargain basement in Edinburgh and for that matter any city in the UK. Several hotels were recommended when you first posted, the Torridon for one. If you choose to ignore these and return to budget hotel in Edinburgh what do you expect? I've driven all over Europe and the roads in the north west are up there with the best of them.
