Best road you've found lately?
Discussion
Last weekend I got up stupidly early in a bid to avoid traffic. Headed of past Gloucester and into Wales, via the Forest of Dean. Some great roads through the forest, and plenty of places to stop off for some pictures. I was aiming for Coleford then on towards Monmouth.
From there I drove down to Tintern Abbey, stopped again for some breakfast and more pictures.
I doubled back slightly to get a road across the river and was heading down some nice single track towards Woolaston and then back up along side the Seven Estuary and back into England.
Maybe not the greatest of roads but certainly worth the early start and just the roof down and scenery, with some good twisty bits thrown in.

I'm lost in that case. I mostly just remember some nice twisty sections, several of which were reduced to a 40 limit with speed cameras on. Meanies.
It was probably the route from Banbury (M40 junction) or Brackley (A43) to Stowe. It's mainly a 50 limit, and a single camera at Farthinghoe. Had an awesome accidental hoon at the weekend. I found myself in the Essex countryside in the early evening and decided I'd take the long way home.
I started off on what I thought was a B-road, but looking at the map I think it might have been the A1060. From there I picked up the B184, which to be fair, I've stumbled on before, and then on to the B1051.
The latter is just superb (if a little narrow in places) and handily leads you to the string of quiet roundabouts on the outskirts of Bishops Stortford. From where you can pick up the equally-glorious B1004 (which I've mentioned in a previous post).
Strange as this sounds, the highlight of the trip for me was coming across this layby on the B184:
I have a near-identical photo taken about six years ago of my old MX-5 in that layby the last time I got lost in the Essex countryside! I didn't live anywhere nearby at the time, but I was on the way back from my visiting my new girlfriend at the time and decided to take the scenic route.
I had such a fantastic evening that day back in 2006 the original trip ranks as one of my all-time favourite motoring memories. Half a decade later in what seems like a very different life it was fantastic to find the same place again - especially on another late summer evening in another chuckable little RWD sports car.

Just been on a great trip around County Durham, Cumbria and Northumberland and took in the B6277 from Middleton in Teesdale to Alston, it's a superb stretch of road. I then went up the A689 and looped back around and down to do the Hartside Pass from just north of Penrith back to Alston, the pass is absolutely stunning. Great day out, I then headed up to Hexham before heading back home through Blanchland and more great B roads.
Although it was a bit wet in places I didn't mind as the roads had very little traffic as a result.
This is a brilliant drive. I do it often; including Alston to Haydon Bridge...Nirvana.Although it was a bit wet in places I didn't mind as the roads had very little traffic as a result.

Best road this weekend is the WA25 around Mount St Helens in Washington State, USA
Traffic free super twisty route for about 80 miles .. with a great view of the Volcano as a plus.
Worthy of a trip if you get the chance
Did you go thru Carson, on the Columbia River, or thru Cougar?Traffic free super twisty route for about 80 miles .. with a great view of the Volcano as a plus.

The series of roads thru Carson- Wind River Road, etc., are actually smoother and twistier than FR25, which is rather bumpy at the north end.
Gonna make my third trip thru there this year, soon.
The rains have arrived so that always adds a bit of spice to it.
B6278 starting just north of Castleside on the A68. Heads south to Stanhope, across the A689 then south to Barnard Castle. Fantastic and luckily 300-odd miles from me or I'd be without a licence for definite.
B2141 Suuth Harting to East Lavant. One of the best bits of road in the area and perfect for trips across to Goodwood. The section up the hill from South Harting is a whole heap of fun, whatever you're driving.
B3227 South Moulton to Gt Torrington. Very nice short blast which I do regularly as my daughter lives that way. Perfect 205 territory but watch out for farm vehicles.
A339 Basingstoke to Alton or vice versa. ANother short blast and local to me too.
B3046 Cliddesden to New ALresford.
A939 Ballater to Speybridge - did this nearly 4 years ago in the snow after hearing about it being shut on Radio 2 a million times. I'd just lost my mum and disappeared to Scotland for a week and set off from Aberdeen at 4am, over the 939 (watched the sun come up just below the Lecht ski centre - very theraputic indeed) then across to the A95 and south to the A9/A86 to Fort William, south through Glencoe and all the way home to Hampshire. Epic road trip, staggeringly wonderful scenery - just want to go again with the right car.

Stumbled across a great road & then route not long ago while driving to a job. All my years of living in Sheffield & Id never been along the first road (Mortimer off the A57) before which has now become a personal fave.
Mortimer Road off the A57, Follow all the way to A616, then left onto A616 & follow until you get to the top of the hills & you'll come across a sign to turn right for Shepley (onto Wood Royd Hill Lane), follow this road round until you get to A635, from here turn off onto the A629 down to the roundabout. From there ive not found a good route back yet. Just been using the A61. But im sure one of you guys will know a better way back.

Ive also found if you detour between C&D at Wall Nook Lane, you get some good roads up to Shepley & get onto the A629 from there.
Definitely would recommend this route. Had an absolute blast in my Type R when I did it. Was in the work van the first time which obviously wasnt as much fun. This isnt a route for low cars though! Mines slightly lowered & was ok, but if youve got it slammed at all, stay away. You'll definitely bottom out in a few places if you dont drive it with care.

Went camping near bamford 2 weeks ago and my grandad of all people recommended the route above as a good driving road so one day we took it as a route to holmfirth from ladybower.
I can second the no go for a low riding car as in places its very bumpy, also watch out for the bits where it looks like the road is going left over a crest where infact it goes sharp right!
Several very very tight 180 deg switchbacks make for fun driving in the wet.
