I'd also heartily recommend the B3227 between the A361 and Taunton. Ended up there at the tail end of a North Devon hoon last year and it's an amazing road, probably an ex trunk route, lovely big sweeping bends and a great section of hairpins...

Not a trunk route, but it used to be the A361 - the main road between Taunton and Barnstaple.
That was before the North Devon Link Road was opened in 1988 between Sampford Peverill and South Molton.

It wasn't anything like as enjoyable back in those days as it carried all the traffic from the A303 to North Devon!

The A361 is itself quite an interesting route - the UK's longest 3 digit A road.

One day I will take the A361 all the way from Rugby to North Devon, I've driven most of it at some point, but never in one hit!

You might find that a tad difficult. The A361 has never at any time got as far as Rugby. smile
It ends at the junction with the A5 in Kilsby, 5 miles to the south east.

I've driven quite a few separate sections of it but never the whole route.

Yeah, it's pretty much Rugby, my mate lives in Kilsby, but more people will know where Rugby is rather than Kilsby. The first section of A361 from Kilsby to Daventry is a fun road.

Agreed with that! The section from where it crosses the A396 on to the A361 is fast n flowing, and crucially fairly quiet!

Just arrived in Lynton for a short break, came via Dulverton and Simonsbath in the OH's MX5.

Having done it previously only at about 6am I was expecting to have my fun spoiled by endless slow people, but I only caught (and rapidly passed driving ) one car the whole way. Fantastic.

live in Bampton, so can recommend most of the roads mentioned here, but would add the B3224 and B3190 to the list to be explored.

If wanting further, the B3227 which was the old A road is good all the way to Stibbs cross, then the A388 to holsworthy and then the A3072 to hatherleigh, but you are a tad out of options at this point

Are there any similar routes across or around Dartmoor?

Not really. Its 40mph over Dartmoor, and you look a complete tt if you go blasting over there, weaving out of all the animals and townies who can't tell the diffence between a cows arse/head.. smile

I am moving from Warwickshire (very close to the A361) to the edge of Exmoor within a month, can't wait as this has been planned for a few years now.

Went over it by accident at the weekend. Had stayed in Barnstaple on way back from holiday in Cornwall. A39 to Lynton and then B3224 to Simonspath and on to Taunton. I was driving an Impreza wagon with wife, kids and a bootful of holiday claggage. Still gave it a goood work out!

i bet you missed a lot of caravans doing that route however it's harvest time so you must of been clobbered by loads of tractors?

No caravans or tractors smile A few 'Sunday drivers' (it was Sunday midday), but nothing that couldn't be dispatched by dropping to 2nd and the kids shouting "Scooby poweerrrr!!!" smile)

Later half of the route was spent on the tail of a well-driven BMW530d that seemed to know where the road was going. A most enjoyable way to end 9 days of holiday before re-joining the the M5 drag at Taunton.

Took the Alfa out for a run today, there are some great sections especially between Dulverton and Simonsbath but we were short of time and couldn't stop for a photo on that section so in the mean time here is one from up on the moor.

The weather was stunning, and the traffic really light. Such a great place to stretch the legs of my Golf GTI smile

There were some greasy/leafy patches under some of the trees, but it was mainly dry and sunny when I got there this afternoon.
