Right - another trip is planned. If I centre around Sledmere, am I in the right zone? driving

Don't worry, I won't tell a soul paperbag

There are some great routes round there, I normaly take that route home to York after work. Beware of Police sitting in wait arounf Sledmere and Fimber. I've only seen them once or twice, but they do catch people.

Devils bridge. Right out of the car park and then left... Follow this road through the valley.

(Is this even Yorkshire or is it classed as Cumbria)

Either way it's good!
I'm guessing the road you are referring to is the B6254 to Carnforth. Kirkby Lonsdale is (just) in Cumbria but within a few hundred yards you cross the border into Lancashire. You have to go more than halfway to Ingleton on the A65 to reach North Yorkshire.

Helmsley to Stokesley (or at least Chop gate), have ridden / driven this road since 1976, and NEVER tire of it.

Not for nothing is it known as the Yorkshire TT. Just avoid weekends / sunny afternoons, as it can be highly police'd not that you'll need to go (too) fast to enjoy the sweeps climbs and dips.

Was up in Yorkshire recently in the LWB Merc Sprinter fully loaded for work and still found some rather enjoyable B roads.

My favourite stretch of road not to far from my house, easily the best in the Moors. Also someone mentioned the B6277 from Middleton in Teesside to Alston, it is bloody brilliant and fairly empty once you get past the car park for High Force waterfall.

The real fun on the B6277 starts (or finishes) at the Langdon Beck YHA Forest-in-Teesdale. Alternatively at the Langdon Beck Hotel just along the road if you're stopping there for lunch. Can recommend that btw. thumbup

Definite thumbup for the B6277, one of my all times great drives, but is well beyond Yorkshire which ends at Tan Hill.

Probably for another thread, but I would always say that the North Pennine roads of County Durham and Northumberland (and Cumbria when you get to Alston) are far more rewarding and appropriate as fast driving roads than the Dales. Better surfaced, far less populated. Anywhere north of the A66 all the way up to the Borders. driving

Dales are prettier and have better pubs though beer

A definite thumbup for Northumberland/Durham. My favoured route back from Edinburgh is the A68 to Jedburgh then via Kielder Forest.
From Jedburgh to the A66 south of Barnard Castle I traverse under 10 miles of any A road. Then over the border at Stang Top.
A quick right just before Langthwaite and head for the Tan Hill Inn. smile

True, but no beer though. I never drink anything alcoholic before or during a journey when I'm the driver. angel
