Hi all. I am driving to Poland on Monday the 18th. Google maps has shown three possible routes. Which one is best? My cousin has done the drive once before and he took the top route passing Berlin and was quite happy with it. Any reasons to chose one of the other two?

Its the route i would take if going to Warsaw or Lodz for certain.
The roads are getting better all the time in Poland, and a decent set of motorways these days are alot better than the ruts of old smile

I'm driving to Poland again on Thursday, and I always take the A2 via Hannover and Berlin.

However, I see that you are heading for Wroclaw, and the route via Leipzig & Dresden appears more direct, although I see that google maps only shows a 12km difference between routes.

I have never driven the southerly route so can't tell you if it is good or bad, but I have never had any bad experiences going via Berlin.

Dunno. Suggest have a look on http://www.autobahn-online.de/ and sort
out which of the autobahns are three lane and which are only two lane.

Suggest use the three lane. When a Polish lorry pulls out unexpectedly,
it gives you more room.

From memory, the section from Aachen to Koln is mostly four lanes wide each
way no limits. 150 mph no problem - but you'll have the world and his
wife queueing up to get past.

We were suggesting that there is rather a lot of polish people at the above locations and therefore it may seem like you were in Poland if you visited said places.

I'm driving an RX8 to Poland next year and to reduce petrol costs intend to get a cheap ferry to the Netherlands and then drive the 500 miles or so to the destination in Poland.

Right I have chosen the top route on the map. Avoiding the Brussels ring road. I have heard there are a lot of unrestricted bits up their so should be good.

I've done that route several times. The Antwerp ring can be very slow at rush-hour – so best to time your trip around this if possible.

The Autobahns are wider, newer and quiter in old East Germany. It's where the money was spent after reunification.

A2 Hannover is mostly 2-lane carriageway. And as previously stated Antwerp is best avoided at rush hour.

Search BFBS you'll find the frequncies for the British Forces radio station. English language radio from the Belgian border to well past Hannover.

Another 1 here who would avoid Antwerp at peak times wink

Also if you want some decent grub on the road in Germany, instead of the motorway services, pull off at any exit with signs for a 'autohof' as these are German truckstops and normally very, very good.
Most are just off the the motorway and always well signed.

Just wait around in Calais for an old VW Passat and follow it all the way
